BR High Compression 2.0L, HTA Green – Wild to Mild

So I’ve done the opposite of what 99% of the people do with this car.* Most people get the Evo and slowly work their way up in power.* Start out with basic bolt-on’s, then a turbo upgrade, then finally a motor.* Well when I bought my Evo
3 years ago, I went straight to the top……built motor, HTA3582, etc.* The car made 553whp on pump gas and 620whp on Q16.* The car stayed this way for 2 years and I had a lot of fun with it.* Last spring, I had the motor refreshed with a set of aluminum rods
and higher compression pistons.* Also added a HTA3586 and a few other things.* The car made 578whp on pump gas and 701whp on E98. *I lost a fuel pump shortly after the re-build and burnt up the rings.* This past winter I had the motor refreshed again….same
setup, no changes.*

*
I got the car back from Buschur about 2 months ago.* Been to the track a couple times, did some “racing in Mexico” and really wasn’t into it anymore.* I didn’t drive the car
much and it just wasn’t what I was looking for anymore.* Back before I owned the Evo, I was really big into autocross with my STI.* Even bold enough to say I was nationally competative in my class.* So I decided to de-mod the car a bit and see how it does
in autocross.* I pulled off the HTA3586 turbo kit and BR Fabricated Intake Manifold and went back to a HTA Green and ported stock intake and exhaust manifolds.* No other changes to the car.*

*
At 30psi of boost on 93 octane, the car made 436whp.* I can’t remember the torque (high 300’s I think).* Maybe David can chime in on that.* On E85, the car made 484whp and
477ft-lbs of torque.* This was at 37psi tapering to 25psi by 8000 RPM.* We were trying to hit the 500whp mark but with the boost dropping off like it was, it just wasn’t in the cards.
*
Personal impression – after driving a loud and laggy big turbo car for 3 years, this car has been an absolute blast to drive on the street so far.* It has power at any RPM
and just flat out goes when I hit the loud pedal.* With the way the car is setup now, I definitely foresee myself driving it a lot more than I did in the past….the fun to drive factor is back again!* This is how Evo’s are meant to be.* I can’t wait for the
first autocross!
*
As always…..thanks again to David Buschur for everything!* This car is an absolute blast to drive!
*
Mod List:
BR 2.0L, 10:1 compression, aluminum rod motor
BR Stage 3 head
BR BF 272 cams
FP HTA Green (18psi actuator)
BR turboback exhaust (2 bullet mufflers)
BR 3” intake
BR intercooler pipes
BR Race FMIC
JimiB ported intake manifold
JimiB ported exhaust manifold
Ebay O2 housing
BR Double Pumper
BR Fuel Rail
ID2000 injectors
AEM EMS
*

*
*
This is comparison I did in Excel this morning comparing the HTA3586 on E98 to the HTA Green on E85.* Remember….only changes were the turbo setup and the intake manifold.*
That’s a 250whp and 300ft-lbs difference at 4500RPM!!

Makes me rethink the black for the hta green... not comparing a black to a hta3586 by any means, but like you said that "insta-torque" is very very appealing.

Nice results.

This seems to be happening more and more...the Evo veterans are ditching the big turbo for FP units. Looks like a great setup. You should try ur luck with a 25psi wga and see if the boost will keep thru the top end a little better

this is why i have a fp black on a 20K setup.. the response is out of this world.. full boost @ 3700-3800rpm and pk tq by 4400. i will never switch to a huge turbo personally. looks like the fp green responds like my black does on a 2.3.. next you should consider a 2.3 they are a blast too.

They sure are loads of fun with fat Green power. I put a gearbox on with the same ratios as a US IX 5 speed and it makes them relentless!

Point and go

Thanks for posting Tim. I'm really glad to see you actually driving and enjoying the car again! I'm getting reports of it being seen clear up in Michigan! haha It is sad to see all you 9 second guys we built a few years ago running smaller turbos, just because of the bragging rights of all the 9 second EVO's out there, I'd rather see that though than the cars being sold or being parked!

Your car and the power band are excellent, I can't wait for that wax job in a few weeks, whether it's my *** or my *****! (inside joke) hahahahaha

I've thought about going down too but with this new stroker set up my power band is so good I think I'm going to stick with the big power so I can still try to get an 8 second pass out of it someday.

Thanks again for the post and kind words. See you at Winged Warrior!

This post is a testament to keeping your car FUN to drive! So many people are in a big rush to run out and buy the biggest baddest turbokit in the business, make big power, and then brag about it....few ever finish those setups because of the pricetags associated with such glory...instead keeping the car simple and fun is worth SO many more smiles and giggles.

In an ideal world maybe we all have two evos, one with a billet67 turbo for drag and big power, and another like this for daily fun and autoX ownage, but in the real world most of us only have enough for one car and if you have to make a choice, I always say keep it simple!

There are a TON of pieces of this post that echo a perfect setup that I planned on owning several years ago, a post made by david buschur himself:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...ion-parts.html

I ended up putting a BBK on my evo8 but it just goes to show that the old fp green, BBK, or new fp hta green are fantastic fantastic turbos to run on your evo, especially because they typically don't push the limit on the stock bottom-end.

Same here. After years of driving GT35R setups I also decided
to go with a 2.4L, built head, big cams with an FP Black. Love the drivable power.

Just for reference, of all of us that went 9's I am the only one who even owns a trailer. Brian B. finally bought one and still has it. Tim, Eric and Jeff all drove the wheels off their cars and never trailered them to any event.
