Dynotech Tuning, BR 2.3RPM + MAP EF4
Dynotech Tuning, BR 2.3RPM + MAP EF4
To my esteemed peers of Evom, here is the story of how my car went from "I need to sell this nightmare" to " I'm never selling this thing!"
When I bought my 9MR in 2008 I brought it to DynoFlash and had a crap tune put in it. It stalled on decel and made little power. I aquired a random assortment of mods over the years, upgrading in a bizarre order which I thought made sense at the time. Two years ago I got tune from English Racing via email which converted me to Speed Density. The car ran beautifully except the cold starts here in New England were awful. The car was undrivable until it warmed up a little (I was glad to deal with that little hicuup though compared to how beautifully the car ran when warm).
Last year I was looking at getting some more power and went to Dynotech Tuning (DTT) in Seekonk Massachusetts. They were great to talk to on the phone, especially when other local shops didn't even respond to my voicemails requesting an appointment. When I arrived they did a free boost leak check before getting on the dyno and they found a BUNCH of leaks. It turns out I am not that great at finding them haha. They also did a compression test, which revealed that one of my clyinders was WAY low. I had been saving for years to do a build, so after seeing their shop and meeting Brian, Jamie, and Tyler, I decided DynoTech was the place to do it.
They sat down with me and found out what I wanted the car for: Daily Driver with Road Racing as the ultimate goal. They walked me through my options with the parts they have used that are tried and true. This is what we came up with:
Buschur 2.3RPM motor
Curt Brown Ported and Polished Head
Buschur Intake Manifold
Buschur Stock Exhaust Manifold
MAP EF4 Turbo
272 cams ( bought "GSC 2s" on Evom and got scammed)
65mm Mil.Spec TB
ETS 4" Wide tank FMIC w/ V2 LICP + UICP with welded Tial BOV and GM IAT sensor
Buschur Double Pumper
Buschur v-band TBE with custom Varex Muffler
MAP 02 housing
DTT Speed Density Intake
FIC 1100 Hi-Z Injectors
Spoolin Up COP
Shep Trans Ultimate Ration 5 Speed swap from my 6 speed
Exedy Twin HD clutch
Grimmspeed 3 port EBC with boost by gear tuning from Jamie
ISC coilover suspension, corner balanced by DTT.
Dyno Results on their MUSTANG DYNO
93 Octane (I may do E-85 one day, but I doubt it)
Uncorrected 442 / 373 **( 499 / 421 dynojet)
Corrected ****417 / 351 **( 471 / *396 dynojet)
The car pulls like *a freight train. The Buschur motor revs so fast and the EF4 never drops power even at 8k+ RPM! I'm sure Jamie could supply us with a dynograph, I seem to have misplaced mine. I was so worried about lag with the bigger EF4, but with the 2.3 and Jamies tuning make the car feel the same if not faster spooling than the stock motor and the stock turbo. The HD clutch feels the exact same as my old exedy HD clutch with NO noise. The Sheptrans feels great and the ultimate ratio really drops the RPMs to exactly where they need to be....I may have tried to go to 6th a couple times out of habit... oops. For those wondering, I do not miss the 6 speed. The difference on the highway isn't really noticable. I researched on this site for MONTHS worrying about it. If you are considering swapping, just do it!!!! I daily my car in downtown Boston traffic and it doesn't bother me in the least. The throttle response is unreal; many times I'd be sitting in traffic years ago thinking "Would a stroker make THAT much of a difference?" Yes, unequivocally, undeniably, irrefutably YES! It's a joy to drive in any condition, I can hit to go-pedal in any gear and I'm doubling the speed limit in seconds.
Here is an example of how different the car is now.*I raced an old friend's GTO for years with my former setup and he would always walk away from me on the highway. He had more power and longer gears. We met on the highway the other day, and we were ready for a third gear pull. Since my car had been built, he also had some work done (Heads, cams, headers, tune). I was a little worried based of off the thunderous roar coming from his pipes. He beeped three times and VROOOOOOOOOOOOOM! In moments he was 4 car lengths behind me! This was a faster version of the car that walked me on the highway! When we pulled over, his face had the same expression of someone who just saw Michael Jackson moonwalk for the very first time. WHAT WAS THAT!? He was in total disbelief.
So that's my review of the car, it's flat out the best DD I could possibly wish for. I'm crushing cars on the road and it's a no lag rocket ship. Now for the guys who put it all together.
I don't want to sound like one of these zombie fans of a shop that scream their name from the highest peaks because they seem popular....bro. These guys are genuine gear heads that LOVE what they do. They are enthusiasts that have found their niche. They would sleep in the shop if they could, they are just that dedicated to what they do. There have been MANY MANY obstacles during this build, from back ordered parts, to unexpected parts needing to be replaced on my car, but they always took it in stride and gave me a set of options. I cannot begin to express how insanely detail-oriented they are. Many times they went above and beyond the normal steps in trouble shooting just to make sure entire systems work working without fault. I would like to say again that I have no reason to lie here, I am not sponsored by them, nor do I receive discounts of any sort: they are just an awesome shop! *They are not the type of shop that will nickel and dime you on labor either, they could have billed me for much, much more than they did.*
If there is anyone in New England that is thinking of having work done, from simple installs, to troubleshooting, to full builds: find your way to Dynotech Tuning. They took a car that lost its luster and reliability in my eyes, and made it what I always hoped it could be.
My final word of advice to anyone looking to mod their car is this: try to save your money and do a build all at once. I wasted so much of my money replacing mods that weren't up to snuff with what I needed. If you put the car all together at once, you save money on installs and tunes. I wish I had saved myself the thousands of dollars by keeping it stockish and then doing this all at once, I could have afforded to make it perfect that much sooner!
Thank you Brian, Jamie, and Tyler! You guys rock!

I wanna see the results on e85 on this setup!
But I have a br2.0LR + ef4 I was on e85 making 590whp 450tq 28psi
On VD. Two weeks or so I should have dyno results hopefully I could see close to 650 on e85.

I'm curious if the tune is ultra conservative, and you also may be running low boost since you plan to track the car. I would think the build and turbo combo would capable of making a lot more power? I also track and autox, so I understand power is not everything...just curious.
The tune is not at the razors edge since it will be subjected to long duration road an auto-x racing. On pump gas, on our mustang dyno, 450whp corrected is about the most we generally see on the EF4 . The EF4 seems to be closer to a FP Red than a Black. It's a great turbo but people seem to have unrealistic expectations to its power capabilities.

Nice review and setup, definitely agree regarding DTT...
I'm almost at 150K miles in my Evo VIII and will be buying a new DD this year. Once I have the DD, I'm planning on also going the stroker route with a larger stock frame turbo. Been running Autoxes with ADSI in RI this year after a decade hiatus, so want a setup for cones and maybe a track day, not much of a drag racer...
