2.3L FP Black Sunoco 104octane

What’s up guys. Just finished up a tune this week with Tom (tscompusa). I’ve been getting tuned by Tom since 2012 now and hope that I continue to as long as I own my Evo! This was one of the smoothest tuning sessions we’ve had in all the recent years.

I’ve had an FP Red on the car since 2014 but just recently upgraded it to the Black (kept my MHI housing but plan on swapping out to SS later this year).

Anyway! Here’s a graph below, I did an overlay with my last tune in 2015 with the FP Red. The only differences now are: FP Black, Double Pumper, CBRE Ported FP Race Manifold and my exhaust was on for this tune but it was open downpipe for the FP Red. Not quite sure why the spool is so close but I am not complaining!

Mod List:
2.3L (Wiseco HD Pistons, Manley Turbo Tuff I-Beam Rods, Manley 100mm Steel Crank)
Buschur Racing Stage One 5 Speed (w/ Exedy Twin Plate HD)
FP DBB Black w/ 25PSI WGA
GSC S2 Cams w/ Kiggly Beehive Springs & Titanium Retainers
ARP L19 Headstuds
CBRE Ported Intake Manifold
CBRE Ported FP Race Manifold
CBRE Throttle Body (65mm)
MAP 3” o2 Eliminator Downpipe – 3” Titanium Catback
Speed Density Conversion
TSCompTuned 4” SD Intake
ETS 3.5” Intercooler w/ MAP LICP & STM Short Route UICP
Tial Q Blowoff
Buschur Double Pumper
FIC 1100cc Injectors
Grimspeed 3 Port + Hallman MBC (Hyrbid Boost Set-Up)

That's amazing how much more power you get with such a tiny additional lag!

Nice Power! I am curious how much the Red would have made with the 4 more PSI the black was running. 4 PSI on that size turbo should be around 50HP.

Thanks! I know right, I was out of fuel pump back then so we couldn’t push it any harder. I want to do a comparison now with the exhaust off to see if it makes more power. I had to take it off for the Red because I found a 2” restriction in it.

Full Spool at 4500 rpms? Seems slow for a 2.3 MHI housing no?? Shouldn't it be more like 3800-4000rpm?
But that torque is monstrous on the Black!
Is it safe to run that much boost on only 104 octane?

I actually really have no idea. I’m not sure I would want it to spool quicker cuz this thing rips as is now! LOL. It’s Sunoco 104 GT Plus (104 Octane), it’s a race gas that I’ve been running for years now and it’s showing no signs that it isn’t good enough.

Full spool at 3800-4000 rpms with an FP Black, even with a 2.3, seems...optimistic.

With so much power difference and so little lag difference, why would anyone buy an FP Red? Maybe the JB had a bigger difference?

They were actually both BB. The only difference is the Black i have now has the Xona Rotor CHRA. I strongly believe something was off with my Red set up making it spool slower than normal.

That would make more sense. Otherwise, FP would just skip over the Red.

A Dyno graph gives you an idea what a turbo does in one environment. On the street the black doesn’t have the transient response that the red has for power sliding and whatnot.
Having a 100mm crank helps the Black come on but I’ve never seen one sliding around. Having a quick spooling turbo in the low gears adds to the fun factor IMO

Both turbos are great Bolton’s but the black will make more power and easier then the red.

To the OP, nice numbers. For a street car the 2.3 fp black MHI is going to fun and responsive. If you are going for max power then the SS will help with that .

Since you've driven both black and red combinations what do you think?
