703whp 3586 Old School 2.4

The NW is kind of a small place and cars seem to have a tendency to get traded around and few of them seem to continue to grow into what the original owner intended.

Brandon bought the car originally from a dealer not knowing he had a built 2.4 floating in a 2003 with only 22,000 original miles. With such a fresh car and a built motor Brandon decided to get crazy. A fully built 5 speed, fortified T-case with LSD, S2s, an FS635 turbo kit and some ethanol got him to here-

He then decided to sell it and go back to off road stuff. The new owner, Tony, picked up where he left off. Maxxing out the FS635 on the fuel system it had then got Tony up a little more than when Brandon owned it.

He decided to have us do some more updates this time around, adding 2150s and a boost actuated dump kit. We also added some bigger fuel line, an AEM rail, and Aeromotive FPR to help control the double pumper that was already installed.

To recap the motor (as far as we know)-

2003 Evo 8

RRE standard rod 2.4 with Eagle rods (use 6 bolt rod bearings...old)
8:1 compression (ues that is Eight to one....OLD SCHOOL 91 octane motor)
RRE ported head (hard to tell how well...going with sanded casting lines only)
GSC S2s
ETS 3586 (we think...used turbo) kit
ETS 3.5" FMIC
3" exhaust
EnglishRacing Testpipe dump
Magnus intake manifold
FIC2150cc injectors
EnglishRacing DP
-6AN upgraded fuel line
SD conversion w/ Omnipower 4 bar

Without further ado-

I think with a change to a Bushmaster ported cylinder head and either S3s or our GSC 12G cams there is definitely more to be had as this car continues to evolve.

Here is the log as well, 4th gear pull to demonstrate what this turbo really does on the street-

Very impressive #'s.

Nice!

Whats this boost activated dump kit thing?

Very impressed, so is the 3586hta worth it then?

It seems to out spool and out power its competitors, but I'd like your word since it seems like you tune/build a lot of these stroker/35r sized turbo setups.

I'd be putting it on a 1g auto dsm.

have to commend you on sharing with the community JohnBradley, it's refreshing to see a top level tuner who is willing to share logs like that, very interesting to see different strategies in tuning, you won't find many a tuner who will put out timing numbers for all to see.

thanks for posting this aaron. is it safe to say, after comparing dynographs, that the hta86 makes power sooner than the fs635? i'm seeing 500+hp/tq at 5000 rpm compared to around 5300-5500rpm on the fs635. probably not a big difference, but proof that it outspools the fs635. Not sure if the fs635 outspools a pte6262 though.

Can you elaborate on these cams?

With regards to a 2.3/2.4L engine, FP grn/red/blk turbo on e85, how would ur cams behave / perform differently than either a S2 or S3 cam?

city driving?

transient response?

top end power?

mrfred Feb 3, 2012 06:38 AM

very impressive.

that is one mean ass ride

They are just the 12mm cams I run, we are working on a name as I am not allowed to call them S2R as a product name. On a smaller turbo I dont think that they would work as well but it is dependent on headflow. I dont think they hurt spool necessarily but they dont help it. I make 21psi at 4200 as is though.

Anthony,

I think we are at the limit of the combo right now. Between compression, cams, and headflow I think we dont have much to gain at this point. I think we can make the combo work like mine but it wasnt picking up power per psi the way I like to see so we stopped at 37psi. On the upside there is a TON of fuel left.

thanks aaron, i think i'm done for awhile. was considering the cam upgrade but i think we've reached the goal. can you send me the maps? can u post an overlay with my previous tune?
