486whp/480tq ER LR2.4 and HKS7460

Keath brought us his built 2.0L IX with an HKS7460 for a retune as he had just been transferred to the local Army base here in WA. Unfortunately when we got to it the 2.0L had already cracked a ringland and busted up some rings. After diagnosing the issues, offering the solutions, Keath opted for one of our proven LR2.4s but wanted to keep everything else the same.

I will be revising this I am sure but the parts listed is fairly normal-

LR2.4
Stock IX head
Cosworth M2s
Stock intake manifold
SD
Works O2 housing
3" TBE
3.8" ETS FMIC and piping
BR double pumper
EC controlled boost with unidentified 3 port

Initially we were going to keep it on a MAF but it soon became apparent that it spooled WAY TOO FAST to let the MAF attempt to manage fueling. Since Keath was more worried about drivability we switched to an Omni 4 bar and our intake pipe kit.

First pull saw 374 at only 16psi so I knew something cool was going to happen. When it started to spin on the rollers at 23psi and I needed to restrap and dyno in 4th I really knew this was going to be cool.

The results-

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...Lim486-480.jpg

The car comes into boost SO FAST that when you look at the time vs boost it goes from vacuum to 28psi in 0.7 seconds. It makes peak torque instantly and on the street it is definitely something else. The HKS7460 is definitely out of breath, the most we have seen is 490 previously, but in this combo it is really fun.

Aaron

keath Jun 20, 2012 05:17 PM

Thanks for the write up Aaron.

yes the car has WORKS o2 housing.
ETS garrett core 3.8.

With BR 2.0 it make Peak TQ at 4100 RPM so it is safe to say that 2.4 made it spool 600rpm sooner.

I will pickup the car tommorow and leave a review on ER and the car.

BTW did i mention these guys made this happen in less than 3 weeks..

uvambo Jun 20, 2012 05:45 PM

Fun city! thats got to be cool to drive. Congrats all around

tscompusa Jun 20, 2012 05:58 PM

sick tq curve.. that will be fun as hell on the street. glad you went to ER keath.. i told you they would take care of you over there :)

Aaron, keith was based here on Fort Sill Oklahoma his evo has always been one of the greatest and cleanest evos out there. I am happy that he got the car with his power goals in mind. I am heading over to the Washington area as well here in the next 5 months and can't wait to see this beast in action. Congrats Keath!

94AWDcoupe Jun 20, 2012 06:38 PM

hmm I like this. I was thinking the HKS would be too small for stroker. but seeing this has me green with envy.
what compression does engine have?

this powerband in evo 8 comes close to the fun I am having with 2.3/green in the evo 1.

wait till you get it back and feel how smooth speed density is vs maf..

you will wonder if you're driving a Mercedes or an evo lol. :D

sliqdaddy91 Jun 20, 2012 07:07 PM

probably has to be one of the most fun cars in the forum on the streets...insane dude nice.

Brainiac Jun 20, 2012 09:09 PM

Wow...that torque comes on in a blink of an eye!

Blue91lx Jun 20, 2012 09:43 PM

Am I allowed to assume that this is on 93?

Should be 9:1 as thats there default comp on most of there 2.4's

the hks GTII 7460 only comes with one selection of exhaust housing.
Pretty sure it's about 9.8cm2 size.

This powerband is amazing. I'm so jealous! Well done ER

Brianawd Jun 21, 2012 07:51 AM

This makes me want a 2.4

PsychDr. HN$ Jun 21, 2012 08:26 AM

Nice numbers! I have a pretty good feeling on how responsive and quick your car feels

Standard 9:1, almost spools too fast. We ran into some partial throttle surge issues that required going leaner and pulling MIVEC to cure. The WOT stuff doesnt change but I had to tone down the response this morning.

E85 in this one, Keath was very firm on gas being a limp map/roadtrip setup only.

4G63Rules Jun 21, 2012 12:07 PM

I want that setup! That has got to be one of the funnest setups I have seen! That is V-8 territory in response.

Anarchy99 Jun 21, 2012 01:26 PM

Man i hate how small that turbo is compared to a Red though...

Blue91lx Jun 21, 2012 01:32 PM

Aaron,

Could you comment on this fast torque hit as it relates to the durability of one's rods/bearings?

keath Jun 21, 2012 03:00 PM

Thanks for the good work guys. ER is simply amazing.

Remember this car got finished within 24day. Everything is in working condition. The crew at ER is just friendly and knowledgeble. I talked with Lucas, Aaron, and Myles for a good hour about my car. I brought my friend (has a New Corvette) with me and we did couple of 2nd and 3rd gear pulls..
Needless to say that he was SHOCKED at how responsive this car was and how the torque just hit out of nowhere.

Yes we did have some MIVEC issues in the morning which Aaron fixed quickly.
After the fix my car does not hit TQ as hard as it was but more smooth ride.

I wanted a safe daily driver that i did not have to worry everytime i got on it, buy what i got back was a monster.

Lucas told me this lower TQ will be also easier on my 6 spd tranny, so I decided to leave it at that. I dont think i will ever have to downshift.

Well thanks to the crew and all the quick work you guys did for me. BTW my friend does not want to race me all of a sudden... LOL

Aaron

I have this issue. It's only under 3k rpm or so. I have to completely let off and let the BOV bleed or it bucks widely. Any chance mine is caused by surge?

blackenedwings Jun 21, 2012 03:36 PM

Really awesome numbers, but how do you avoid surging like mad with a turbo that small strapped to a 2.4! This setup would tear up on a road course... any track days in it's future?

This you would have to ask Aaron himself.

It does not surge in any gear.

if that's in 4th gear its because you're going WOT to low of rpm with your fp black. it will surge because the engine wont beable to take all the air in.. basically spits it back out. to low of load and rpm..

do a pull in 4th starting at 2000rpm and you will surge.. then try doing it again at 5000.. you wont surge.

don't worry you're not alone.. all the bigger stock frame turbo cars will do this if you dont give enough load / rpm for the engine to use the airflow the turbos trying to force into the engine.

by all means do not keep doing it though! its very bad for the engine and turbo.

yeah I am def. overworking you old turbo..
Aaron said this turbo is totally maxed out.

GotWheelHop Jun 24, 2012 12:06 AM

Wow. That is so stupid how quick it comes into boost. I would be spending a LOT of time sideways, for sure.

MIVEC needed altered in comparison to how I have done it in the past.

Strict7gsr Jul 3, 2012 10:15 AM

Is there absolutely no way to prevent the car from overboosting? With a 2.4 and HKS turbo while still retaining the MAF that is?

Evo8Master Jul 3, 2012 10:32 AM

How much more power would this setup make with a ported head and intake?{thumbup}{thumbup}

Grimgrak Jul 3, 2012 10:55 AM

Is there a link somewhere for the ER 2.4'? Can't seem to find anything on their website.

The car is on Speed Density. Run great no surge or overboost at 25 psi.

Its not overboosting its a function of how the MAF works. It spools so fast and then you let off the air that has been measured in the MAF is then released right? The problem is the ECU has already added fuel for the air it expects to get and then doesnt get it. It goes WAY rich and then the O2 sensor freaks out and pulls back on the trims making it go temporarily lean. Repeat this formula 6-7 times in 30 seconds, you get pissed off how it drives, and then you decide to switch to SD and make it function the way it should.

We dont have the 2.4 listed on the website because we prefer to discuss both your goals and usage before we build the motor. We offer the standard 150mm rod 2.4 and the 156mm long rod which is currently the only motor we seem to build.

Please contact us through PM here, email- sales@englishracing.net , or via phone (360)-210-7484.

Thanks

Go read the BW thread.. I've been away from this site for a year and the BW thread is still going LOL..

Anyway that's some pretty serious insta-torque. I remember R/T's HKS would spool instantly on a 2.0 & I couldn't imagine what it would be like on a 2.4.. gd!

R/TErnie Jul 6, 2012 04:36 PM

BW has a Titanium aluminum turbine wheel... which means it has a significantly reduced MOI of the rotating assembly. Which means it'll have INSANE transient response. I'm expecting my EFR7670 to respond as fast if not faster than the HKS7460... and make another 150whp.

It's the definition of having your cake and eating it too.

Grimgrak Jul 7, 2012 09:20 AM

I take it no one has dyno'd the efr version of the 7670 with a 2.0+ block yet?
Closest I could find was this
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...-graph-43.html

and the spool at 3k is not close.

R/TErnie Jul 7, 2012 09:25 PM

There are a lot of differences between those two cars. And I promise you the transient response on the EFR setup is better than the HKS. 2.3L vs. 2.4L... not to mention the intake manifold, cams, and cylinder head packages are way different. MIVEC versus non-mivec... list goes on. The HKS won't make over 500whp and the EFR will do over 600... so like everything else it's a compromise.

Grimgrak Jul 8, 2012 08:05 AM

Does the EFR 7670 allow stock manifold or do you need a custom tubular?
Having some problems finding pricing on the efr turbo anyone know where to find a price list? Or roughly how much more having a alu/ti turbine wheel costs vs say a regular or a inconel?

R/TErnie Jul 8, 2012 09:52 AM

EFR7670's go for around 1800 IIRC. Hit up Raffi @ Full-Race for a price quote. EFR's do not bolt up to the OEM manifold... not stock appearing so you need a manifold, downpipe, dumptubes, oil lines, etc.

sorry for the OT Keath
