That's a poor comparision. The Chinese turbos are junk because of the material and machining on them. These guys are talking about refurbishing a damaged quality turbo.

I wouldn't do it though. Gamma-Titanium is a partial ceramic, if I understand correctly. Makes me think the impact strength is probably pretty low to begin with and there are probably micro-fractures all over the place on that turbine from motor bits impacting the blades at high speed. You won't see those micro-fractures though...just the results of them some (short) time down the road.

If this was an inconel wheel, hell yeah have at it.

Not a ceramic. Correct terminology is intermetallic. As you suspect, the fracture toughness does suck at room temperature. Probably not too bad at operating temperature though.

Mrfred, that's the term I was looking for, thanks.

The fracture toughness actually decreases with temperature still. Here is a paper on Gamma Titanium Aluminide fracture toughness. I haven't had time to read it, just looked at the graph against temperature.

But it almost looks like there may be a crack formed at the root of one of the blades near the "super back." Could just be the picture though.

Edit: Never mind on the paper. Still an interesting read, but it is a different phase of Ti-Al.
