what are you talking about?? this is no simple fix, chunks of piston went thru the turbine wheel. the turbo sustained FOD (foreign object damage) and should not be run. if you pay for known damaged turbos that look like this attachement (leetevos turbo) you are asking for trouble

man I have run 35r turbos with three times that amount of tip damage. sure curbside appeal is lost, sure they average joe freaks out when he sees it. NO loss of performance what soever. ever heard of of a clipped turbine wheel?? I would run that turbo like white on rice for 500 bucks. but thanks for defending yourself.

I would also use that turbo for $500. Damage is barely anything.

I'm with you guys, I'd run it and have also run much worse with no signs of loss in performance.

this is a time attack car, it spends 20 minute sessions with that turbo spinning well over 130k rpm peaks... not a drag car making 9 sec passes. not wise for it to be operating at those speeds, out of balance

none of us said he should use it but that WE would use it. If you are condemning it to death using it until it is really dead is a no brainer to me. Turbo failures dont usually cause engine damage and with a restrictor this would smoke a lot before it used up all the oil in the car.

Also the balance wouldnt be terrible if you got all the melted aluminum off the turbine wheel. A torch seems like a decent method. I am not sure if that is Jerry's method.

Yea- imbalance for sure.... Taking it apart and not have the comp and nut in the exact position as before= imbalance.

Flirting with disaster

Oh, well that changes everything It's tough for me to even get to work over the last 20+ years of doing this to be honest. I have to start my car, go WOT for 9 seconds, then shut it down, stop and do it again and again until I get to where I am going. I know it sounds fun but believe me fellas, it's tough being able to do nothing but drag race everyday of my life. My poor Explorer I just bought doesn't know what to think, start it, punch it to back out of the garage, shut it off, start it punch it to get to the end of the drive way, shut it off, on and on and over and over again........

I wouldn't run that turbo for $500 or $5. There is no point in doing something cheaply when you have a fully built car. Cutting corners like that almost invariably costs more in the long run. You wouldn't run a time attack car with a used oil cooler from a car with a catastrophic failure even if you had gotten it cheap and cleaned it. The cost isn't worth the risk. I feel the same way about a turbo with foreign object damage.
