IX Turbo's (budget building)

Hi all what are some results when upgrading to a standard IX turbo (to any owners with the Series below IX). As I'm on a budget I want to upgrade from the stock VII turbo to the IX!!! Ive heard you can gain 30whp with co-operating mods

current engine mods:
Walbro fuel pump
Hot side and cold side IC piping
Trust front pipe and catback exhaust
1.2 bar actuator
tune on the evo 7 factory ecu with 210atwk @ 18psi

It'll probably be cheaper, and better for now, to add bigger injectors, intercooler, and a set of drop in cams as opposed to the 9 turbo.

How is this cheaper? You can get used 9 turbos for $250

Either way,switching to 9 turbo is a smart move.i didn't find for $250,I bought full set up(exhaust mani,oil lines,etc) but it was worth it.around 30HP,maybe a little less.

Here was my results back then:

I ended up upgrading turbos gain afterwards :)

I agree get a FMIC atleast when upgrading to the 9 turbo since you will be running a little higher boost will avoid a lot of heat soak and will pick up more hp as well. I made 355whp with the 9 turbo, 255 wlabro licp, full cbe with meth @ 28 psi.

Well here in AUS 9 turbos go for around 600-950 depending on milage. I was going for that turbo an o2 dump and a highflow cat. Hopefully I see close to a gain of 35whp

I would buy a 9 turbo for cheap that needs rebuilt. Rebuild it with a 20g compressor wheel and SL2 turbine.

I got my HTA71 CHRA for 600 bucks from FP, I made 360HP and 362TQ on a mustang dyno with the mods in my sig

Those results Aren't not to bad @slosrt4. I can get a new 9 Turbo for 1000(AUD) through connections just Found out!!! :D So I think ill settle for that plus a 02dump and highflow cat at the same time ill do a timing belt and water pump (gates) if I can get 340whp im happy for 6 months

don't use high flow cat get a resonated test pipe.

1000 for a Evo 9 turbo doesn't seem that great for such a small upgrade. I would go with a little bigger turbo like a green that won't add to much spool but really help with top end and overall power.

Ralliart004 Mar 27, 2014 02:09 PM

I have a 9 turbo on my 8 and managed to make 375 with supporting mods.

- FMIC
- hardpipe kit (intercooler and intake)
- greddy 720 fuel injectors
- turbo outlet
- HKS 280 cams
- COP setup (no real power difference)
- FP cast race manifold
- Full exhaust

Everything else is pretty much stock. The only change i have made since then was a FP anti surge cover and then switch to race gas or e85. Evo 9 turbos are cheap to find used and make decent power for most evo owners and pay for themselves in terms of keeping your car running overall.

@ralliart004 do you feel your pushing the Bottom end with that power output?

To be honest I am much more comfortable with this output than trying to jump into a much bigger setup like 500+ or 600hp+. Most people through Evom and MLR have identified 400+ lb/ft to be the beginning of the end versus raw hp output.

I would love more power sure however the reliability and maintenance is going to be expensive.
