Evo8 upgrading Evo9 turbo

********UPDATE (I did the Evo9 turbo swap. see post 47 below)*********

I've spent a good amount of time scouring Google and EvoM for quantifiable data on what an Evo9 turbo does to an Evo8, but couldn't find much...all things else being the same. Here are a couple questions I'd like to know before I go this route (keep in mind that I already have a 10.5 hotside)

1. I'm currently running 23psi on my Evo8 turbo. If I swap to an Evo9 turbo, while keeping 23psi, will I gain anything?
2. Seems like the Evo9 turbo should be able to run more boost than an 8. How much boost can I run on Evo9 turbo on pump gas 93 octane?
3. Does anyone have any dyno charts that prove this?

Here's what I currently have (327/315). This is a before and after adding ported exhaust manifold, ported 10.5 hotside, and megan 02 housing...all Swaintech coated as well.

i would just save your money and get like a hta green or something. your not gonna see a big increase by switching turbos. its not even worth it in my opinion

you said you plan to run it at 23psi just like you did the 8, but then again you ask how far can the evo 9 turbo be pushed too? i dont understand.

I would just do like evojoe said save your money and just wait to get something a bit bigger and better and if you want HP you have the option to do it

you can go BBK, HTA Green, or even the new HKS turbo GT7460

The 23psi comment was a gauge to see if the 9 turbo is more efficient at the same psi or not. And then if it can be pushed to higher boost, then that's still a win to me.
I'm considering the 9 turbo cuz it's a much cheaper alternative for me right now, versus the mentioned turbos above.

a 9 turbo on pump gas is not gonna make that much power. trust me man just save up and get a green, you will be kicking yourself if you dont. switching to a 9 turbo is hardly an upgrade

from a 03 evo 8 turbo to a 9 turbo you will probably see a 20-30whp gain with tuning.

if thats all you can afford then get it. it is better then a small 8 turbo..

in the future you can always sell it and get 90%of ur money back

My goals are to try to keep all the low-mid range power as I can, since I autocross competitively. If I can get to 350whp on a hot day, I'll be happy...for a while . (I'm currently at 327 on a decently warm night).

I figured an Evo9 turbo can be had for ~$400-500 with lines, it's cheap enough to test out and resell if I'm not happy.

But now that everyone is discouraging me, I may have to reconsider things.

That should of been my first question what are your goals? well i mean you are 13 hp away from 350 from your sig i can still see you are missing a few mods.

I mean if thats all you really want and you will be happy with is 350 then either get the turbo or get more bolt-ons so you can reach 350 which i know you can do with the 8 turbo.

But the reason why i believe everyone is telling you not to get it, its because later you might want more HP and the 9 turbo wont be able to get you there.

Another factor is that you only want pump gas so thats another reason why many of us might just tell you to save your money and get something a bit bigger.

Of all the people saying that that an evo9 turbo upgrade is a waste, how many of you have actually upgraded to an evo9 turbo? I say this because when i upgraded from evo8/9.8 to an evo9 turbo, there were noticeable gains everywhere in the powerband. I dyno'd 264whp on a mustang dyno and then upgraded to an evo9 turbo. The numbers after were 286whp and gains as much as 30whp throughout the powerband. I felt that the evo9 turbo spooled slightly faster also. Spent $400 for a complete evo9 turbo plus about $75 for gaskets etc and $200 for a retune, installed the turbo myself. So for around $700 i think its well worth it instead of spending around $1800 for a BBK etc, plus you can send in the evo9 turbo to convert to a BBK when you get tired of the power.
As of now, im still on the evo9 turbo making 375whp with the addition of e85 and cams.

I havent upgraded so i cant really tell you from personal experience. I actually have friends that have upgraded. Each one of us has an opinion, i believe from him just wanting 350 and he is already at 327 is a waste of money. He is not far at all from 350.

Stories like this make me excited to get the 9 turbo again Any chance you have any dyno sheets I can compare with, esp on the low-end? ie: I look at my chart, at 3000rpms, I make about 100hp, at 3500 I make 175hp. Is yours the same or better?

350 on a hot day will make me satisfied, but if there's more to be had...that's icing on the cake for me. Later down the road, I can sell the 9 turbo and make back most of the money and then upgrade to a bigger turbo, or I can just completely convert to E85 and continue pushing it. I've thought some of it out
