With the Evo8 turbo, I've been having to detune my tune due to seeing knock lately. I'm pointing the finger at the changing gas blends for the winter. Anyways, I tuned the knock out of the Evo8 turbo and made 305/292 and then swapped the Evo9 turbo in.

So on the same tank of crappy gas, 23*F cooler, here's how my power graph looks in comparison to the Evo8 tune I just did a week ago:

Gains throughout the entire powerband. I hit peak load at 3550rpms now, as opposed to 3750ish before, meaning quicker spool. I'm not sure how much the cold front plays in this comparison, but I did check SAE correction for both power graphs.

If in the next several weeks I run into a good tank of gas, I'll retune and see how much more of a difference this makes. But then again, I could be wishfully thinking I have a bad tank of gas.

By the way, I made this power running a crap load less timing than before. (ie: used to run 6 degrees of timing on the Evo8 turbo at 4500rpm, and am now running only 3 degrees. I used to run 13 degrees of timing at 7000rpm on the 8 turbo, and am now running 9. Crazy.) Both on 23.5psi

Looks like a good bang for the buck! I think this is the route I may go with my budget build, thanks for sharing.

good #s. but for the work involved. Just swap with something you know will make the power +1 for fp

Nice gains, and in-line with what others have seen with the EVO IX turbo, but there's probably too many different variables (especially the temperature) to make your dyno comparison for-sure accurate. You probably need to test in similar weather to be sure.

BTW, your car has a nice power curve, pulling strong on the top end.

If you send out the CHRA with the comp and turbine wheels attached to get balanced as an assembly, you'll gain some hp. Some turbos gain more, some less.

Then port the hotside and o2 housing (smoothing the transition into the O2 housing basically) will also give you some hp.

Those two little mods will also allow you to run a bit more boost and timing, therefore getting you a little more gain.

Done!

Milford (member who sold me the turbo) said he sent the turbo to FP to get inspected before I received it. It came to me looking practically unused, no signs of exhaust gas blemishes and barely any rust. He claimed only 2000 miles on it, so I think the turbo's in great shape.

If you get 93 octane in Florida, you should be boosting this bad boy to at least 25 psi. My turbo, and exhaust mani are ported, and I can get away with 26 on cali 91 pisstane, w/ stock intercooler.

Can you post up proof to substantiate your claim that merely balancing a stock, factory MHI 16G turbo's rotating assembly alone will result in a measurable horsepower increase? I doubt that you will be able to corroborate this claim with any conclusive dynoplots. I am prepared to eat my hat!

Pretty soon everyone will be removing their stock IX turbos and sending them into X shop for a horsepower augmenting balance job.....Right!

I really don't care to. It's just advice. I saw gains from balancing mine, and I'm happy with it. If you want to know, go figure it our yourself. If you don't believe me, I don't really care.

Exactly what gains did you see between your unbalanced turbo and your rebalanced turbo? How can you be giving out this quack advice and then defend it anyway?

EDIT: You can state whatever you might wish to on here and it might even sound plausible. My worry is that some newbie might go to the trouble and expense of removing his/her turbo and then further go to the expense of sending it in to a turbo shop to have it machine, or VSR balanced and expect to see some sort of worthwhile power increase as a result of your advice. This is just nonsense.

It was a known fact way back when the Evo's first came out in the states and there was not much you could do to mod them. People just seem to have forgot about it.
