Post Escort X50 Radar Detector Issues...

Those of you with the Escort X50 radar detector who are having the false LASER detection alarm go off when you accelerate there is a fix.... Just got off the phone with escort, they accept them being mailed back to them, if its older then a year they charge 60... they run a complete diagnostics, adjust the infrared sensors for the laser to not be so sensitive. They are claiming the problems are because of excess RF coming from the car or devices in the car... they said sometimes even cell phones can cause this problem if the detector is out of tolerance. I would think that if you are within the 1 year warranty the service is free.

Address and Procedures:

Call escort to get the RMA number

mail detector with description of what is wrong with it to the address below, include the power chord, if you did not make payment over the phone, include check or paper with your credit card info on it.

escort inc
5440 west chester rd.
west chester, oh 45069

I know there were a bunch of us with this problem... im just tired of using the mute button while trying to shift.

LOL, typical for them to say that. There is actually a problem with the windshield itself on our cars and other vehicles. There is a film on the glass that actually makes the laser reflect off the windshield back into the device. So them turning it down, means less acurate and may still false. Worth a shot though, but when i had that problem with a Bel, now owned by passport, they didn't fix crap.

Interesting. My old 8500 non-X50 has done this for awhile and I disabled the laser on it. Its a huge PITA.

Its total bull. Bel's customer service was the worst but this new rx65 i just bought is just plain phenominal. It has serious range strait or around corners and doesnt false 1/100th as much as my old vector LR. I hear it is essentailly the same thing as the x50 with a few differences and havent experienced teh problem you're talking about with the x50 or the rx65. And the part about the phones setting them off is very true. Mostly happens with Motorolas because they cause super interference with everthing. Good info though and keep us updated.

Ha. That motorola thing is funny. You're lucky because here in CT, I've seen troopers using only laser for the last few years now. Town cops here use K, Ka, and laser so you guys are lucky down there.

I had this problem but I found a good shaking to be good enough to re-align the laser detection. It has happened in every car I've put it in, 1995 240Sx, 2003 EVO, and 2006 Altima

It seems to be a toss up between the valentine one and the passport 8500 x50. I own a v1 and my brother owns the x50. I chose the v1 because it was the only detector I found to be upgradeable (you can send them back to valentine for the newest firmware), and I really liked the directional arrows feature. It sounds to me like x50 may be programmable as well, I'm not sure but I do know that my v1 is, and I can do nifty things like muting k band for 10 secs unless its 5 signal bars or stronger, which really helps in Salt Lake because it seems like k band is bleeding everywhere. I'm sure most people already know about this, but in case you were interested in seeing what you are able to program in the v1, go here:

On my old 8500 I had this problem..so I just disabled the laser. No problems with this yet on my x50.

The laser detecting is useless anyway...once you're tagged, thats it.

I may be imagining things, but (I think) I've been driving behind someone who got tagged, and I was able to save myself because I got a little deflection without getting nailed. This is just my oppinion but I don't see any point in turning off one of the features that sets your detector apart from the cheapies. If you have to turn off a feature to avoid a glitch, the manufacturer hasn't done their job properly *IMO*.

I agree that the manufacturer didn't do their job properly...but then they want to charge you for their mistake

owell. Maybe I got lucky on my x50. I haven't had this happen with it yet

a lot of people havent had the problem, but a lot have.... maybe its a bad batch or something, i just dont want to pay the 60 to have them see if there is a problem and maybe not be able to fix it. i even asked for a refurbished replacement, no luck. oh well, my laser warning never goes off when a cop is around anyway, its always when i accelerate or a bird flies by or it is raining and my RF containg windshield wipers are on (knocks on wood)
