Faust... you just touched on something that I forgot to mention earlier. I have a EB IX as well and I just remembered that there may be a difference due to the SSL package which gets that Premium Sound System that Mitsu likes advertise as great sound option upgrade to the non SSL cars Please share any info that might be needed to get a after market Alpine single din setup to work and continue to use the stock Amp would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any and all help!

Joe

Also, I bookmarked this thread for how-to open the dash. Check out the post by housedj:

Thanks Heavyboots!!!! you are a life saver. If I would have only got the one harness to get from the radio to the stock radio harness I would have been really upset. Does anyone know if this is the one I will need for sure?

I call it Busted. Evo 8 and Evo 9 have the same radio. I have the harness on both from Circuit city. Again, Busted!.

The actuall harness is a two piece harness, they are sold independently. One harness is the radio / interface harness and the second one is a custom built manufacturer spec harness (depends on what brand you buy, Alpine, Kenwood,Eclipse, etc)

I can display pictures if needed.

I recently installed a pioneer deck in my evo IX last weekend and the install was extremely easy. I bought the wiring harness kit (from best buy) which worked perfectly, and I also relocated the deck where the gauges were and the gauges to where the deck was. But I didn't use the relocation kit that everyone is talking about. Is the IX different from the VIII where you need a relocation kit?

When i moved the gauges to the top location, i used 2 of the 4 screws to hold it in because the 4 holes weren't perfectly aligned, but if you use two screws it stays square to the dash. For the radio I used the factory steel mounts and the factory gauge plastic spacers and long screws to bolt it into the gauge location. Fits beautiful. I did have to flip the plastic spacers around to make them fit against the radio, but everything still fits mint!

I'd be happy to show pics of everything if anyone is interested. I hate to put the relocation kits out of business but you don't need em.

I confirm that at least Alpine supports the two stage full harness whcih is the full plug and play (no splicing or curring required). Each harness cost around $16 each and it is a direct plug and play from Mistubishi radio oem harness to intermidiate harness that connects to the Alpine.

At this point I rather speak only for what I can confirm(Alpine stereos on Evo 8 and Evo 9 (that is what I have on mine).

I am confident that just about any name brand would also have the same harness available. I chose this type of harness not only because the installation is abreeze but also because the simplicity and how clean the finish is.

Give a try to Circuit city, that is where I got mine. Believe me I am here to help other Evo members and not to confuse anyone.

Just ask for the Lancer wiring harness. The harness does not specifically say EVO on it. It is for the Lancer. Different cars yet same radio wiring. Cost about 10 bucks at best buy.

I agree with busted. I'd take your business elsewhere. If they had really done evo's they would have known. And smart harness' are a great thing, wouldn't you agree carlos?

You can get these harnesses at circuit city?? I went to the local circuit city and they said they had nothing for my Evo. My brother has hard wired a bunch of cd players and is really good at it. But I don't like the messy look of it all. So the more plug-and-play I can get, the better.

Nice choice with Alpine. I swear by Alpine. My brother put one in his car back in high school, like 7 years ago. It went from car to car. It ended up sitting in a car he didn't use for like a year. He ended up putting the same cd player into one of his newer cars and it still worked awesome. It could play cd's with the worst scratches with zero problems. He ended up selling it for like $70 even though it was like 7 years hold .

I tried a Panasonic HU once...it crapped out on me in less than a year.

I just bought the CDA-9857 for the Evo. The iPod part I could care less for, but my girl has an iPod, so it's probably a good idea to have the compatability in my car as well as hers.

Kenwood vs Factory adapter harness

I have a question that's kind of pertinent to this thread. Just got the Metra Lancer factory wiring harness adapter from Best Buy and the dimmer situation is a bit confusing.

There is an orange wire that says "Illumination" and an orange/black wire that says "Negative Dimmer" on the factory adapter harness.

However, the Kenwood harness I want to hook up to has only one illumination wire, described as "Dimmer control wire" in the manual (pg 40), which is orange/white. So.... I'm assuming I hook the orange/white Kenwood to the orange/black factory adapter harness and ignore the orange "Illumination" wire altogether? I think?

Anyone had experience trying to figure this bit out? Thanks!

Unfortunately you're both backwards. Connect Illumination to the Orange line, and leave the orange/black dangling (tape it up of course).
