What do you guys think?

I am considering installing 2 ultra shallow 10 inch sub woofers under the 2 front seats of my evo 9. I made a box out of cardboard as a mock up to see what it would be like and it will work perfectally. I love to race my car at Shawano track (its a relaly big go cart track that they open to cars in wisconsin) and the system only would weigh in at about 35 lbs with everything so it wont be too heavy. Has any one done this before? Will it be weird to have a sub right under your butt? Will it sound good? Thanks for your thoughts.

I think it's added weight!

Alright, we know what the EVO is, and it's not luxury and it's not a car you'll find in DUB. I think it's just more weight you'll be adding to the car. Personally. I'm still looking to take things out of mine. But, to each his own. If you feel like it, do it. Don't care what others think, you're the one paying the bills.

I dont think that would be a great idea....i think you would hear alot of things vibrating all in the cabin. Remember how cheap the interior of our cars are and how even now when you hit the slightest bump you hear your dash rattle. Now think what that would sound like with two subs under your seat thumping away.

yeah i am just trying to get a nice balanced sound. No ghetto blasters. I just did BR stage 1 and 2 so i figured i could take my weight savings and try to make the ride a little bit more enjoyable.

"Ultra shallow" would mean they will sound "ultra crappy" as the more air a sub moves the better the bass. IMO bad idea.

Resonant Engineering site

I'll say get one of these resonant engineering subs (preferably ONE 8-inch sub) to keep the weight down. Thats up to you if u wanna go with 2-amp setup or just one to run the whole system.

BTW, I'm going with the one 8 setup and put it in between where our rear armrest folds down (of course it's still gonna be in the trunk) I just dont know yet what amp setup (one or two) im going for

Anyways, good luck with whatever u go for.

I saw one thread with and 8 inch sub in the arm rest which didnt look to difficult and looked nice. I would like to keep my trunk as open as possible because i am always useing it to haul stuff.

That's actually an ideal place for a subwoofer. Since the subwoofer is almost always delegated to the back of a vehicle, the highs and mids sound as if they're separated from the lows, since the bass is coming from the back. Audio competitors try to lessen this effect by tuning, or box design, while some even install subwoofers under the front seats, under the dash, or even sunken into the floor under the floormats. If you can find a way to get them to fit, you'll have a great sounding system.

Subwoofer size and linear excursion and sound quality are unrelated. As long as the box is built to spec and correctly, and you're not expecting to set any SPL records with a subwoofer mounted under your seat, almost any subwoofer will sound great. In fact, since they'll be under your seats, their output will need to be a fraction of the output of traditional setups or else the bass will be overpowering. I would've put subs under my seats, but the seat motors would've gotten in the way.

I remember there was a company that made really nice SQL (sound quality) subwoofers where the magnet was mounted in front of the cone, resulting in a subwoofer w/ a traditional subwoofer shaped cone, but a mounting depth of something like 3" for a 10". I want to say that Image Dynamics made them, but I'm not sure. Focal also used to make a 5.25" subwoofer. I never heard either of them, but I'm sure that they sound pretty decent if they're from those two companies. Well, anyway, those sound like an ideal solution for your problem.
Apparently Pioneer makes a new shallow mount subwoofer too.

If you don't really care about how it sounds to other people, you could check out Aura Bass Shakers. My friend installed them in his car, mounted to a board, mounted to the bottom of the front seats, and he had great things to say about them. You can't really hear them, but your brain processes the vibrations as sound, so they still "sound" really good. It's a really weird sensation because if you're sitting in the chair, you swear you hear a subwoofer, but your ears don't really hear it. The best part is that they're pretty low wattage; IIRC, they only require around 50 watts rms, which is substantially less than a traditional subwoofer.

Id rather have a box in the trunk thats easily removeable. But 2 downfire 10"s/8"s will sound fine.

Ive only seen one bass shaker install... it could have been done wrong but I thought it was terrible. Seemed more like you were sitting on an xbox controller than listening to good music. I like the idea but the execution was not so great

if you aren't looking for a tremendous amount of bass, try an 8 inch in the center console. or take a pioneer shallow mount 10 and make a small enclosure for the side of the trunk.

would you be interested in an enclosure w/sub for the trunk that weighs in at about 20 lbs? And i guarantee it will sound 100 times better than a shallow 8 or 10 under your seat, and it would look factory and be fairly easy to remove if need be. PM me if you're interested.
