looking for good door speakers

hey guys. as much as i love how loud my car is from the motor to exhaust its over powering my stock radio. i am picking up a head unit soon but for door speakers i dont know whats really that good. i am looking for nice clean crisp sound. i know there not subs but id like the base to be notable. if i have to put an amp on the speakers i really dont care.

what sizes can we fit in the front doors and on the rear deck? i do not mind going bigger then stock but i wont go cutting nothing up.

also the stock tweeters in the A pillars. i do not mind upgrading them either.

keep in mind i do not have a budget for this but on the same note lets be reasonable.

thanks for your help

I'd keep the stock speakers until you have a chance to hear them with your new HU. You'd be amazed what they sound like with a good front end. Which HU is it?

If you do decide to upgrade the speakers, it's not as simple as dropping them in, assuming you're looking for better sound. I'd be happy to help you, but I'd suggest trying the stock speakers first. I can explain why, if you like.

Edit: You asked about sizes. The stock size is a rather uncommon 6.75. 6.5 speakers fit with adapters that had be had on Ebay. I'd stick with a depth of ~2.5" for ease of installation. Leave the rear speakers out and put those funds toward better gear.

While the stock speakers sound OK. The doors make any speakers sound like crap. The evo doors are by far the most flexible door structure of any car I've come to deal with so far. Even the stock speakers will make the door vibrate and resonate like crazy.

You will probably want to stiffen up the doors with sound deadener. Made a HUGE difference for me.

Agreed. A couple SDS CLD tiles placed in the center of the door (sheetmetal) will make for a noticeable improvement, as would sealing the door for a proper IB alignment.

They're also (arguably) the worst possible aftermarket speakers to drive with a HU. As you claim to be an EE who worked on an audio design team, whatever that is, why do you think that's the case?

In practical terms, given the mounting locations in an Evo, their tweeters couldn't present a worse match for the environment. The drivers sound lean and shrill. Driven by a HU, there's no hope. Like I said in reply to your other post, advice is great if it has relevance to the OP's dilemma.

I used PPI 6.5 inch components up front, with a spacer. (barely got them to clear the window) I used 6.5 inch Image Dynamics in the rear and was able to get by with mounting them up to the factory speaker screw locations. I dont remember the model numbers exactly but can post them later.
