Stock wing effectiveness
Hi everyone,
I've been searching this forum and online trying to determine if a wing is useful on a mostly street car. Bought the car without a wing on it, so I can't compare it to anything. The Evo sure looks better without it, but do you gain anything from having it? Highway stability?
What are your thoughts?

I strongly disagree that the Evo looks better without the wing.
But to answer your question
From testing on this site by multiple members its been found that the factory rear wing on the 8 produces about 50ft-lbs of down force at 100mph. When the factory vortex generator is thrown in the mix the drag coefficient is lowered a good bit.
Take 50lbs off the very back of your car (crash beam, spare tire/jack, carpet) and see how it drives. Its a noticeable difference. Thats basically how it will behave at 60-140mph
BTW a lower drag coefficient = less parasitic drag which means better MPG's

the wing on the evo is designed to flow perfectly well with the roof lines so it DOES help with the handling....as for the what looks better its up to you. Some like it with the wing some dont. I have tried it both way and the car looks sweet both ways, but the wing gives it the little spiceness and makes it stand out just like the STI.

Ive heard the Vortex gen helps the effectiveness by smoothing the boundary layer near the window. This isnt required unless youre doing motorsports stuff and then youll probably go to a bigger wing anyway.
