I have not tried it with them taken off. They are all ran through the radio harness, and i just removed and reinstalled them to a new location.
I had them installed since 07, so i dont think its the gauges.
Ive had the car for 6yrs now, and this problem just came up late last yr.
Never had a problem like this before. Maybe its the dash light itself.

first time i noticed it, the dash went off for about 5min, then came back on as i was driving to a meet and greet. Didnt happen for about 2 weeks, then the next time it never came back on.

Check fuse #20 (7.5 amp) in the underhood fuse box. That fuse is for the passenger side parking/running lights, it shares the same power source for the dash lights (green and white wire). If that fuse blows power will back feed and short to ground causing the problem your having. If that fuse looks good replace it anyway and see what happens. LMK what happens

On my buddies car the dash light comes on as soon as you crank the car or ignition in the on position. Adjusting the dimmer doesn't brighten or darken the dash lights. He does have a Blaupunkt cd player installed. Not sure if that is the root of the problem or not

Having the same problem also...

Dash started flickering in and out for about 30 min then never came back on. This was the gauge cluster/heater controls, etc...Passenger side running lights also went out. Swapped the #20 fuse today (def. blown) and all running lights came back on but the dash didnt. Gauge cluster works but heater controls/defi's dont illuminate any more...

Anyone figure this out yet? Having the same problem. Started yesterday after installing a new head unit. When I get off work today I am going to disconnect the Orange Illum wire, and mess with it to see if I can figure it out. Will update later tonight.

Sorry It took a couple of days. But I fixed the problem. Disconnected the Orange Illumination wire, still had no gauge lights.

Went through all of the fuses and found the #6 fuse under the dash to be blown and #20 under the hood. Replaced those and everything works again.

Hope this works for you guys.
