Rear crash beam, results are in..
IMO the crash beam is more about spreading the impact over more of the structure of the car. Obviously that means on slower speed impacts you get a lot of unnecessary damage, but on high speed impacts I'd want the force spread as evenly over the entire structure as possible.
In any event that was a big hit & I doubt that the driver was totally OK. That hit would hurt big time.
The OP mentioned having the rear spare, in which would help absorb some of the energy IMO (alot of us dont run the spare)
i dont believe posting that accident as proof that the rear beam does nothing is legitimate.
ANY "car" would be destroyed in that kind of accident.
to each their own on wanting to remove or not.
if you want a good example of if its needed or not, a test showing one with and one without at the same speeds would be better. (oem, not talking about demonworkz)

crash beams are a joke anyway. It could have been a steel framed 1 ton pickup and still would have been destroyed. Last I checked my pickup didn't even have a crash beam, just a steel bumper. When they say it is for safety they mean the person running into you. It gives them something nice a solid to hit instead of just running into your trunk or engine where metal rips and shreds and becomes sharp and deadly.
In the pic you can see where the crash beam did its job at the nice crease at the bottom of the trunk, had the crash beam not been present the back of the car would have looked like popcorn, blown out in every direction.

I spent 3 days cutting & welding my rear crash beam to make it fit under my JDM 8 bumper... Even with having a trunk cage, I just didn't feel safe without the crash beam! For how thick & solid it is, it would absorb a fair amount of the initial impact. Gotta remember, the more metal there is to get crushed, the less energy will be transmitted to the passengers. And aside from all that, can u imagine getting your car smashed like that Evo in the pic & having the insurance company telling u your claim is being denied because u removed the crash beam!? That would be pretty devastating financially for most people..
Was it really that hard to get it to fit??
If that impact was due to a car going ~80 mph like was said earlier, then this is a pretty safe car. That damage isnt that bad for an impact at that speed. Most cars would look something similar to that anyhow. If you want something that can withstand an 80 mph impact better then I suggest you buy an H1 hummer or something like a F350.

That car was smoked hard... even if you build a brick wall behind the evo, it still would have been smoked...
