Ipod cable question - not working

I just picked up a 06 MR yesterday. It came equipped with a Pioneer head unit and with an iPod cable. The problem is I can't get the my iPhone 4 to connect to it. When connected, it will display "This accessory will not charge device" or something along those lines. I am able to scroll through my music directory on the head unit, but no sound will come out.

I tried my brothers iPhone 4s and his will not even recognize it has been plugged into anything.

Is it safe to assume that either the head unit or the iPod cable are only compatible with the 3g / 3gs? Has anyone else run into something similar before?

Getting that message usually means the cable or device was designed for the previous iPhone or Touch. Have you looked up the radio to see if it's 4/4S compatible?

yea, just found a site that shows the iPod connector and it lists the generations that it works with. It only goes up to 3g, so that is my problem. Now I just need to find out if I wanna buy an old iPod or buy a new adapter for my phone.

Thanks for the response!

you should still have an aux jack which would allow you to hear some music. I know pioneer does that ish with a few head units which require using both 30 pin connectors and aux jack.

that does work, unforunately after long term use of using the AUX cable in the headphone jack of your phone, it eventually starts to **** up... thats what happen with my older 30g ipod classic years ago.

check on amazon im sure you can find the cable for a decent price.

Or a new headunit. If all you want is compatibility w/ your Iwhatever just look for a new headunit. Hell, you might get exactly what you want for the price of an old Ipod.
