In depth comparison Prosport Boost Gauge vs AEM

[SIZE="3"]Having owned both gauges and seeing ALOT of posts asking what is better and what to buy, I decided I would post this thread.

The two gauges I am comparing are, the prosport Vac/Boost EVO SERIES and the AEM Boost display gauge.

When talking about each gauge I will use BLUE font for PROSPORT and RED font for AEM

First off some quick specs to compare

- Prosport EVO series Boost gauge is priced at $85.00
- AEM Boost display gauge is priced at $168.25
- Both the Prosport and the AEM are -30 Vaccum and +35 Boost
- Prosport is a full digital display and the values are all an image that changes
- AEM has individual LED lights for the sweep display and a display for the numerical value.
- Prosport has a - for vaccum while AEM doesnt.

First impressions

- PROSPORT
When pulling the box apart for the Prosport I immediately noticed the wires. The wires are very thin gauge (compare it to a needle) and very fragile and cheap. They do not have an insulation around them and are all freely exposed and easily get tangled. The boost sensor is also very cheap and feels very fragile.

- AEM
Out of the box this gauge is much nicer, first off it is packaged nicer in its own kind of display. The wires are pretty thick and insulated to keep them nice and neat. The boost sensor is nice and heavy, most likely made of brass, and you can feel the quality difference.

Installation

- PROSPORT
The installation is going to be a little more complicated than the AEM because you need to wire Power and ground for the gauge as well as the boost sensor, and than an additional wire from the boost sensor to the gauge.

- AEM
Installation is easier than the prosport, You have power and ground for the gauge and the wires for the boost sensor are already provided and splice off from the harness.

Display and Speed

- PROSPORT
The display is very VERY hard to read during the day, because the display is one full screen the glare from the sun makes it close to impossible to read. It has a dimming feature but its controlled by an allen screw that you have to turn directly in the back of the gauge. The gauge when boosting has a little bit of lag but looks great while the numbers are changing the transition is smooth. When the car is off but gauge is on it sometimes reads -2 instead of 0, weird problem that makes me wonder how accurate it is. The digital number will be a little smaller than the AEM because it is very compacted since its again a full display. The display does a full sweep and startup animation when powered on and says "EVO" above the digital number.

- AEM
The display on the AEM is very simple, and very easy to read. During the day or at night it reads great (the gauge has a self dimming feature which makes it very easy to read day or night). The AEM when boosting is going to be a bit quicker than the prosport the sensor to me seems very sensitive. The display is nice and big makes it super easy to glance at it and get a reading. This is more of a simple gauge while the prosport will be a bit flashy.

Overall, both are nice gauges. I first had my prosport and liked it, but the quality difference between the two is like night and day. You get what you pay for. I had my prosport for almost 2 years, and had to rewire the ground cable for my boost sensor Multiple times, to the point where I ran out of length, thats why I bought the AEM. I highly recommend saving some money up and buying the AEM over the prosport. But if you want a cheap gauge with cheap parts and dont mind having to replace some, go with the prosport.

Thanks for the read and I hope this may help people in the future looking into buying boost gauges

i tried a different kind of prosport gauge 5 years ago and didnt like them. they were cheap, the needles were off and they began to malfunction after only a few days.

truth to the mantra "you get what you paid for"
