No power and negative gets hot

Car worked fine before I had to pull the head to replace valves. Put everything back together and nothing worked and the negative terminal go red hot. Checked the wiring on the starter and alternator and they are hooked up... any ideas? Could I have missed a ground somewhere on the engine to cause this?...05 evo 8

something is shorting. Use a meter to chase it down. Also look for signs of rodents cheweing on your harness, its more common if the car sat for a little while.
