Possible broken clock spring?
Possible broken clock spring?
Hey everybody. I Recently noticed when I’m driving my evo, that the SRS comes on and off on its own. It turns off when I make hard right or hard left turn. And when I straighten the wheel again it comes back on? Would this be an indication of a broken or messed up clock spring?
There's probably a way to test it. AFAIK the clockspring is just a wiring extension, it simply manages the cable across multiple turns of the wheel. You could probably do simple continuity checks. Download the service manual and see what it has on it.
As far as the intermittent nature of your light, I doubt it would be related to a broken clock spring. It's probably a small gauge wire, so it's not like you have a thick multi thread wire that's frayed and only makes contact in a certain position.
Maybe the wiring harnesses are loose or terminals oxidized.

Yeah whenever I started inspecting the steering column under the plastic, every time I would move the wheel up or down the light would go off. I’m thinking one of those wires are caught somewhere or something. Just had me scratching my head.
Looks like the clock spring has a special tool for testing.
Maybe you should just go to a dealer or specialist. A diagnostic shouldn't be too expensive. The airbag system is obviously pretty important. It also pre-tensions seat belts before a crash. So not something you really want to backyard-mechanic.
