Cam Gear Installation/Newb

Hey!

New guy here. Been following the forums for a while now but today is my first time posting.

I do have a question which I posted in another one of the forums here but I don't think it's seeing much action. I wanted to know if anyone might have done a cam gear swap without changing the cams. I want to know if it is possible to loosen the fasteners on the cam gears without pulling the valve cover to hold the cam in place. Can you simply put the car in gear so that the engine won't turn? Some other suggestions maybe?

I just called the dealership and it will take 3-4 business days and over $60 to replace the gaskets on the valve cover.

I would like to know that same thing... It seems to me that it is possible but, you will have to deal with the cams moving. I just ordered some cam gears so I will try the install and see what happens...

Wow you got raiped! Call up Lancershop i got 2 valve cover gasket for $20 each. Anyway i would just take the valve cover off and hold the cams. But you dont need a new Valve cover gasket unless you ripped the rubber one or somthing. They can be reused.

You may want to get some replacement cam gear bolts. Mine on the exhaust side was way over tightened from the factory and rounded the head off when I was trying to remove it . The guys at Vishnu said they've seen a couple like this. Which led to pulling the cam and milling the head of the bolt off. Which was fun. The real fun came when I was trying to find a replacement for it as it is not a real common size and thread pitch. They are @.95 cents each and the dealer can get them overnight.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Have many of you reused your gaskets without leaks? Any tips on how to be careful with it so it doesn't tear?
