Timing off 1 tooth. How many degrees is that? I need to adjust. HELP!!

Hey all,

The long saga continues with my cam change. I for sure jumped a tooth. The car is going in on Thursday but I want to set it right so i can drive it to the shop (another shop this time). I set then to test this morning at -8 degrees. For some reason I think each tooth is worth 6 degrees. The car runs better, but I want to get it right on. Oh, by the way this is on Vishnu gears. Thanks for the tech info.

ruzs, I have a set of Fidanza gears sitting here, and I count 48 teeth on them. Which means, each tooth is 7.5*. But the real question is, are you SURE it jumped just one tooth?

Jumped timing

Yes, 1 tooth is the worst it jumped as when I aligned the crank mark, it doesn't even look like 1 tooth, it looks like 1/2 a tooth. Go figure. This is why I was not sure it jumped at all untill I retarded everything by 6 degrees and the car worked much better. I will try 7.5% at lunch to make sure it gains more power and then take the car to the shop tomorrow. Thanks for the answer. I feel bad as an engineer not to have looked at my stock gears, counted the teeth and figured it out.

That's ghetto. You should redo your timing belt, not use your timing gears to compensate for the slipped tooth.

I don't think you jumped at all. If you retard 5-6 degrees, you'll definitely make more power.

Moreover, Vishnu gears are off a tooth and are supposed to be zeroed at the red dot and not the zero point anyway. If you set them TDC to the 0 mark, you're 7.5 degrees advanced. No wonder it woke up, because that's like putting it back to zero.

Mods, can one of you please move this to the Vishnu forum so we can better help this guy out? Thanks!
