Toasted Clutch or Engine Damage?
Toasted Clutch or Engine Damage?
Ok i have a slipping clutch, it doesnt grab until about 4k-5500 rpm. well i was on a little hill and a car was behind me and i tried revving it high and lettin off clutch early so it would climb up before hitting the car behind me. Well , no luck it revved to redline and barely moved, let off gas and went to about 5800rpm, tapped gas it redlined and barely moved making it over, well as i was making the left turn u could see some smoke puff out of the hood vent and it made some kind of howl noise, sounded sort of like spinning the tires but came from the engine bay area and the clutch smelled the whole time home. Well called a friend of mine and he says i toasted the clutch basically and is now on its rivets? cant spell it. He is saying basically the carbon kevlar or whatever the stock clutch is made of is all gone and is ridin metal to metal. Is this correct? I mean it was scary when i heard teh noise after. I am not driving the car right now it is sitting. So the question is, did it damage the tranny in anyway or just the clutch or the flywheel

yes this is correct, I am not sure if you will need a NEW flywheel or if just re-surfacing it will work. maybe someone else that has taken a clutch down this far can let you know. Wonder how much a NEW flywheel is?

a LOT. The thing is, at the last clutch change, the flywheel was changed with another OEM mitsu flywheel which is less than a year old. i pray to God it isnt the flywheel. i just ordered a ACT clutch and hope i dont need a flywheel!!!! please tell me its not

the ACT is already ordered, its on its way and i am staying with it, my concern is i just toasted it and am wondering if it did any damage to the flywheel whatsoever. if i can get it resurfaced its fine, but i just dont wanna end up replacing it. I am not worried about the clutch, i know that is done for, im just worried about the tranny and flywheel.
can someone else help me with?? the issue is: is the flywheel damaged???? or can i just resurface it!?!?! HOW CAN I TELL THE FLYWHEEL IS DAMAGED FROM JUST DRIVING IT??? i drove the car really slow to the gas station (top speed 40mph) and it runs it just slips, does this mean the flywheels ok? HELP!
The only way to tell if it can be resurfaced or not is by actually taking the clutch apart and looking at it...If you put deep scratches into it or warped it badly by overheating it then you'll need a new one, if not, you should be fine with the original...It sounds like you really wore that clutch down until nothing was left. I've heard and had clutches that slipped, but what you are describing is pretty bad slipage...Have the mechanic determine the flywheel condition.
You won't know if the flywheel sh*t the bed until you get the clutch off of it. Then you can check to see how bad it is.
Not trying to be a hater here I'm just trying to understand what is doing this, this has obviously happened to you once before judging by your first post. What the hell are you doing? Drag racing? Or are you just learning to drive stick?

Howling due to blown transfer case, etc.
I'm curious about this howling noise. I'm experiencing what I would describe as a load "groan" (maybe it's a howl?) when I slowly release the clutch (and adding gas, of course) in first in second gears only. Could it be the transfer case, as in evoinit's case?

in my opinion i would never do a ACT clutch to my EVO. I have one in my eclipse i couldnt image that clamping force on my drivetrain. I would almost expect the TC to go with the install of the ACT clutch.
