TC destruction?

Exclamation TC destruction?

Ok i just want to know what causes most TC to blow. IS it dropping the clutch at 6k? Aftermarket clutch? Will slipping the clutch still cause the TC to blow? Im just trying to figure out what the problem is so i can avoid mine from blowing. Can shifting fast between gears bust the TC? I baby my car so much but sometimes i want to get on it.I baby the car so much that it has never seen a track at all!!By the way i was riding in my friends Evo and he seems to shift fast and hard and all i heard was a loud "clunk" after every shift, what is that soud? Someone said it was the rear diff, any suggestions? Is it bad for the car? Sorry for so many questions but im new to my Evo and you guys know more about the car. thanks

From what I have read on the forum ... it seems those that destory their TC are not using the proper spec oil in the TC, but then again there may be more to it than that ... do a little search it may help ....

I've also heard that the tc are improper aligned.. or something to that efect... so some are destined to boom. it's only a matter of time... also the removal of the clutch restrictor pill seems to cause alot more shock on the drivetrain if not properly driven....

That "clunk" usually happens when someone who has removed the restrictor lets the clutch out WAY too fast. The shock affects everything - tranny, TC, front, center, and rear diffs, but the tranny and TC are the first to take the blow. Mine is in for a TC replacement (warranty), and I have the stock oil in it. I took the restrictor out, and admit, that once or twice had the "clunk" myself. I am not sure why the TC ground itself to bits, I haven't been hard on it since I removed the restrictor, but I 'll find out more tomorrow when I get to look at it apart.

Wheel hop and the resulting shock. Can be done with stock HP and a monkey driver.

I hear a *clank* when I'm accelerating quickly but shifting slow enough to avoid the 2-3 grind. Is this bad? At first I thought it was the jack or spare tire being jostled when I shift but after anchoring both of them it sounds like it's coming from the front end of the car. I've got 2100 miles on the car and I have driven it with care but it did not always make this sound. Any thoughts?

Does the *clank* happen with the shift, or when you let out the clutch? My guess is, you may be letting out the clutch too quickly, causing a large amount of strain on the rest of the drivetrain. Also, if you let out the clutch WHILE you are still trying to shift gears (sometimes this can be close when you shift fast), you can get the same shock. So be careful not to let the clutch engage until you are sure you have shifted fully into gear. --IMHO--

ive heard that wheel hop is pretty common in what breaks the TC.

Yeah, I suppose that would pose a problem, but more for the front diff I should think. I have never hopped the wheels, so that isn't what went wrong with my TC. Hopefully I'll find out tomorrow.

In a word: shock.

An aftermarket clutch, thinner gear oil, wheel hop, removing the restrictor, etc. all make it easy to shock drivetrain parts. It just so happens that the TC is the first part to go, thus probably the weakest or just consistently in the wrong place in the drivetrain at the wrong time.

If you know how to drive your car you can avoid it entirely.

I get a clank only when going into reverse sometimes. Can this be the TC, too? I have an aftermarket clutch (ACT EVO)
