Self tuning stock ECu????

I dont want to start flashing or anything. But I was just wondering what kind of software I would need to be able to plug into my stock ECU to do some tuning of my own instead of having to send ECU's back and forth to tuners.Any ideas??

I'm not sure you understand what "flashing" means. It means using external software and hardware to change the parameters used by the ECU. This is exactly what you are asking to do. All you need to do is purchase the device and start tuning -- the problem is that it is expensive, and it would be much cheaper to just buy a standalone. I wish someone would reverse engineer the communication and make an affordable version, but it's unlikely because of the work involved and limited market. I'm sure someone will be able to give you more details about the hardware you would need.

I think a portion of the large expense is extracting the ECU code.. Thats not something that is done easily.. But your right, The hardware isn't super expensive, but more than most would be willing to spend, the same with the software. It just isn't cost effective unless you can recoup the cost.

I suspect the hardware and software pricing is intentionally kept high, it doesn't appear that the devices or software are anywhere near state of the art.

I Hope you have ALOT of money, as the software and hardware is not cheap. Trust me if it was cheap ALOT of people would have done it.

I was just wondering because when I got flashed they just hooked up the laptop to my car.I didnt know if there was a program for it or somthing. We know the EVO mechanic at the dealership down here and I bet he has the program.Maybe not.I was just wondering.Guess Ill be sending my ECU out everytime I need to which is fine because I know I cant do any better than TT which is who did my ECU.I just thought it would be easy after I got it back to hook up the wideband and if it needs tweeking to be able to call them up and ask them what to change.

Oh yeah, I bet you're right. It's amazing when you think about it though. Our cars come with a pretty sophisticated, programable computer that we can't get to because it is proprietary. Therefore it creates a niche business where people have to remove the ECU and ship it around the country to get it tuned! Don't get me wrong, the tuners have every right to charge for their expertise. It is their experience that makes the service valuable, not the tool.
