EVO Tranny

I know this topic has been disscussed a lot but i am looking at getting an 03 Evo VIII brandew new. I am getting a great deal because my dealer has to sell it. I have been reading a lot of post not only in this forum but others too about evo transmissions and how they have failed. I will get the warrenty but how much should i worry about this after the warrenty is up?

i don't think you'd have to worry about it much. get that extended warranty for extra peace of mind then go have some fun!

There are a lot of threads on the TC failing, not transmissions. Aside from grinding occasionally and slightly weak syncros they are not a problem. More often than not, people are complaining about the transfer case. Most of the time the TC fails due to rough launches which induce wheel hop and destroy the spider gears in the differential.

Basically, if you don't abuse it, it should last just fine. I would be more concerned about the "brandnew" Evo. How many miles on it? I always worry when I hear "the dealer has to sell it". Make sure you are not getting an abused test car!

Good luck,

I haven't head about any transmission weakness, the transfer case could possibly be a weak point, but as stated above, as long as you don't abuse it and use the reccomended oil(sae-90, not 75-90) you should be fine. Also, from what I've read, in Europe and Japan, the evo has proven to be a pretty reliable car over the long term, so long as it's properly maintained of course.
