Back to Stock Intake

So back in early September, I came across a good deal on the HKS Intake Pipe, which is part of the HKS RS Intake System. I figured I'd install the HKS Intake Pipe and join to back up to the stock air box (and eventually install the Suction Kit and remove the stock air box). So I had a friend install it (who is also a certified Mitsu EVO mechanic) and it worked great, I could definitely hear to the turbo a little better and it felt like the car gained maybe a bout 5 WHP in the higher gears. So after a couple days I started noticing idle problems in 1st gear. If I was at a complete stop and gave it some gas and started letting the clutch out, then went a few feet, took it out of gear and stopped again the car would idle funny, like it was running to lean/ rich. The RPMs would drop to 400 or 500 and then it would fix itself and go back to 950. Then a few times it would out right stall out. Fast forward to last night. I was making a U turn and had to stop to back up because I took the U turn too wide. Well I was in 1st while doing this, and the car just died.

(Side Note) : In the 3 months of having this I've maybe had this problems about 15 times total.

(Side Question) : Will the car start if it's not in Neutral ?

So the car wouldn't start now, I tried twice, then realized I still had the car in reverse, took it out of reverse and started right up, but with a nice Check Engine Light. So I drove home, disconnected the battery to clear the CEL and drove around for an hour, no CEL. So this morning I woke up and said "The stock intake pipe is going back on".

So I just put the stock intake pipe back on and the car is running great again, though I think I didn't got the return hose on the Diverter Valve on 100% tight on the nipple, when I took it for a test drive around the block, I could hear the DV when I switched gears in high boost, not a whoosh by any means, just slightly audible; but then again maybe this is normal to hear when it's cold outside (I'm going to go buy some new clamps for that hose and make sure it's on). I guess the point of this post is to warn everyone who still thinks a new intake with out proper tuning is okay; when for some it is a freaking horrible idea.

I also noticed this, I've seen a lot of post where people say their car has idle problems when they close the hood too hard. I had this problem too with the HKS Intake Pipe, when I went back to stock, no problem.

So now I'm back to bone stock, and I a plan to take my upgrade path very seriously. I'll buy the parts, then wait to have them installed and the car tuned for them at this same time. I would like to learn how to tune this car myself, so I can become more self sufficient, but then again I don't want to teach myself on 30K car. Maybe I should buy a Talon as my DD and teach myself on that.

So I am assuming that the K&N Drop in filter, just allows more air flow through quicker. Is the MAF able to handle this without tuning ?

i hope by k&n you mean drop in filter and not typhoon.

the hood dropping wont happen on the stock box because the pressure doesnt go into the intake and effect the maf like with the hks (since its more of an open element).
i have the hks with the mr dv and have slight idle problems when going from reverse to first or turning tightly into or out of a parking spot, but have never had any stall issues. (but i also have exhaust and a p2 flash.)

i was thinking about getting another intake set up (dejon tool pipe with buschur cone) and then going and getting 3 dyno pulls (with hks rs, stock, and the one mentioned above) and see how it turns out in the end.
dont think it will happen anytime soon cause of my work schedule, but ill make a post of the results when it does.

yeah, i meant the drop in, sorry i didn't clarify. i put mine in a bit ago and i'm loving it. hard to explain but everything seems a lot smoother throughout the rev-band. as far as noticing any gains, i haven't noticed anything special, although people have said they've seen gains of like 4whp or something crazy like that. all i know is that my stock BOV is a bit more audible now and being off-boost isn't as rough.
