I hand tighten then go a 1/4 turn with the wrench. Never leaks.

i would definitely tighten it 1/4 of a turn more...i'd rather wrestle a bit with an oil filter wrench next time i change my oil than have my filter come off while driving!

i have never heard of any oil filter coming off on a car whie driving even if its hand tightened just tighten it to snug with your hand and like some of the post here says you only use the oil filter ratchet to take it off since it gets kinda slippy.

Yeah, I took it off awhile ago and put on a new one and just hand tightened it. No problems since.

Did you leave the old filter gasket on by mistake? I did that once and couldn't figure out why it was leaking. Oops. Two gaskets.
