EVO Replacement Clutch Question
EVO Replacement Clutch Question
Well, my stock clutch has finally started to go after 15,000 miles.
Now the big question, go stock or go aftermarket? I have read many of the posts about warranty denial on engine/tranny failures if there is an aftermarket clutch installed. My Mitsu Service Manager has told me that if I choose to go with an aftermarket clutch, no matter what type, that most likely they would not be able to cover any future problems with the drivetrain. He said typically their district rep wants to inspect any major warranty work before it is done and that he would probably blame the clutch.
So, I have a few questions for all of you who have been through this -
1) Has anyone been SUCCESSFUL at getting engine or tranny warranty work done on your car even though you had an aftermarket clutch installed?
1a) If so, exactly what clutch did you have?
1b) How did you approach the issue with your service manager or district rep?
2) My first choice for aftermarket is the Exedy Twin Disc and I have heard many great things about. Anyone care to share any NEGATIVE experiences?
3) Anyone know the difference in average lifespan between the Exedy Twin Disc and the Exedy Hyper Carbon single?
BTW, I do not have to pay for the install, because the dealership is doing the TSB repair for the bad syncros. They are just going to pop the new clutch in when they put the tranny back on.
Thanks everyone for any input you can give! Sorry for such a long post.

I need a flywheel no matter what route I go. Mitsu dealership told me that they are "not allowed to resurface the stock flywheel". Anyone else heard this?

I agree, I just ordered the ACT clutch for mine. Also have you verified if they will install the clutch for you at no charge? I was thinking of having Mitsu install mine once they do my 5th gear but I had planned on paying them for labor. I would figure they'll charge me at least 1 hr.
It is probably up to each service manager. I have a a great relationship with all the folks at my dealership, so I think they do a little extra. They told me that since they had everything torn down anyway, that they would just pop in what ever clutch I decided to go with. Here is how I am seeing things -
Exedy Twin Disc ~$1300, no labor cost, probably lose warranty, TOTAL cost if tranny and T-case hold up = $1300
Stock ~$400, no labor cost now, keep warranty, plus another $400 clutch plus $500-$800 in labor in 6 months when the clutch goes again, TOTAL cost if tranny and T-case holds up = $1300-$1600
The only way the stock clutch is going to be the better deal is if there happens to be a warranty issue. Do I take that gamble? I don't know - I can't decide.

Thanks Tex for the input. It is appreciated and will help me with my decision.
I have done quite a bit or reading and research on the forums. I know that ACT is by far the most popular aftermarket clutch, but I decided that I want to go in a different direction. I also have read about all the warranty denials because of aftermarket clutches.
After all that I still had a few specific questions to which I did not find answers. Notice I did not post another "What is the best clutch" question. That has been covered many times.
Thanks again for your opinions. Does anyone else have opinions or answers for my original questions?

for the price you pay for the exedy twin disks you can buy a ACT and have it installed. i just got my ACT installed last week, $500 to install and it's way stronger than the stock clutch. enough grab than i can ask for.

Thanks guys. I have gone ahead and ordered the Exedy Twin Disc from Buschur. They are pretty close to me and have great customer service, so even though I could have got it for $100 less somewhere else I decided to give them my hard earned $$. I should have it in a couple of days.
I did know that the Exedy is louder than stock. I am familiar with the chatter issues. Not a problem for me as long as it lasts more than 6 months.
As for the Technical Service Bulletins, they are not true recalls, so Mitsh does not send out a letter to all owners. From what I understand, the TSB covers defects or common problems that happens in many, but not all cars, and does not cause a safety issue. If a customer shows up with a complaint that has been covered in a TSB, the service shop is instructed on exactly how to fix it and what new/updated parts to order. In my case is was concerning a catch/syncro problem shifting from 2nd to 3rd. 4th-5th is also mentioned in the TSB that I read. If you have a good relationship with your service department they will probably replace everything even if there is not a major problem. After all, they get paid about $100 per hour for any warranty work. And fixing a tranny is a good 8-12 hours.
