Opinions - GT3040R?

I'm building a 2.3 stroker with all the requisite goodies including forged pistons & rods, ported & polished head & oversized valves.

Prior to my build I was running a BR440 with their stage 4 mods. It's a great turbo with almost stock like spool and great top end. However, I'm thinking that the BR440 will run out of breath with the higher air flow. Since this is a street car that will ocassionally see track duty at HPDE/TT events 10- 15 days a year I'm looking for a quick spooling turbo that will support at least 450whp on 100 octane. I see that ATP is selling a GT3040R. This is basically a GT30R turbine with a GT35R compressor. Based on my rough calculations the GT35R compressor is a better match for the 2.3L than the GT30R. I'm thinking this combination will provide a quick spool, minimal lag and still provide decent air flow at the top end.

Ideas? Opinions? Anyone with first hand experience with one of these?

I had one on my car before I did the gt35r

Its a bit more top end than the 3037 - but not worth the extra lag IMHO

Gt35R is the only way to go and now Buschur has one which fits on your manifold

I fear the spool & lag with the GT35R. I'm afraid it's not going to be responsive enough for my taste. I wish I could drive a well set up GT35R on either a 2L or 2.3 stroker.

My thinking was that the smaller turbine of the GT30 with a .63 A/R would spool very quickly. Maybe it would be too restrictive? Or maybe to much of a mismatch for the GT35R compressor?

I think there's a guy in the area that recently built a motor with an AMS GT35R. I wonder if I can hook up with him and take his for a spin.

35R will lag no matter what you do. 3076, 3037 and 3071 is the only way to go.

Can I take it out after you? I seriously need to get out and meet some of the locals. I'm probably going to stop in at the Mach V dyno day this afternoon and see if I can at least meet a couple of people.

On turbo choice, are you thinking of selling the whole kit? Wouldn't it be easier just to swap in something like a BR500BB? Surely it would make 450 whp on a stroker and race gas.

I have the BR500bb (gt30r of some sort) and on a 2.0L it spools almost as fast as stock and has no problem with 29lbs boost. The car sure feels fast as hell, won't know for sure till I get some 1/4 mile times. In a lot of ways the turbo almost makes to much power, it is very hard to get through 1st and 2nd without hitting the rev limit (7800?). I will go out to Gingerman as soon as they open to get a good feel for how car spools on the track, I do know I DON'T have to rip the shifts for the tubo to stay on boost. Seems like on a 2.3L it would have as good as or better then stock spool.

I'm thinking you may want to give David a try first propellerhead... Remember that he has a trade in program on the turbos, and you can bet that he is not going to BULLSHlT you.

Will you be going out there on a T&T day? I'd really would like to get a ride from you to see how your car runs with the gt30r.

At what RPM are you seeing 20psi of boost? Based on my calculations, at a 2.3L at 20psi & 26psi will just skirt the edge of the surge line of a GT30R at 3800rpm.

I'm not giving up on Buschur just yet. I'm just looking at all my options. David has told me that there is no trade-in/trade-up program. I was quoted ~$1550 to upgrade to a BR500bb. I'm not sure if this upgrade requires a new downpipe or if that price includes everything I'll need to bolt in the GT30R.

Yes, I will be going out to Gingerman during a T&T when they open this spring, if you really want a ride I will be happy to.

As far as boost goes I was thinking of getting my wife to sit in the back seat with a video camara to get a 3rd gear pull to see what the boost verse rpm really is. The car is all over the road in 3rd so it is really hard to try and watch the boost gauge. I will see if I can get it done this weekend and posted.

Hahaha, nuf said! It sounds like it's a real beast. When I was running the BR440 on the 2.0L it was a bit of a hand full. Almost stupid fast for the street. It sounds like a GT30R or variant along with this new motor will take it up a notch or two once I get it all sorted and fully tuned.

You've got a PM. Is the GT3076R availble with an external wastegate?

Got a few third and fourth gear pulls today so get and idea of where the boost is. I get 28lbs by 3600 and get a 20lbs around 2800 rpm. I do have head work and am sure that helps get the boost up faster.
