Airbox and filter

Had the Evo over a year, waiting to break it in and to learn from others mistakes before making some of my own. Being big on max torque, I've held off changing intake, since I figure the factory box is designed for a good match of volume and velocity to the intake system. Cold air intakes usually max HP and bog you off the line. But, I'd consider a well-designed box replacement - Now Lancershop has the Apexi aluminum induction box, which you use with their cone filter (which costs as much as their aluminum box!). Anyway, this seems like the right approach, but can't see the pics to tell if this box has improved or retained the slot-like opening pointed toward the hood.

Anyone have experience with this piece out there?

Also, how much real-world improvement do you get with just a turbo downpipe install, over factory? Is it best to make this part of a total exhaust swap?

Cheers, Pete

just doing the downpipe will actually take you max power away and changes the power curve, adding the whole system will help tons. now on the intake im not for sure because im running a perrin intake tube and sponge filter, it isnt cold air but if you take the water injection off the car and run a tube (like a dryer exhaust tube) from the front bumper and route it the way the tank for the injection system is, you will have a cheap cold air setup

the downpipe will give u more max power, i gained 7whp in max power with just a tanabe downpipe, and anaverage of 2-8whp across the power band. esp from 6000-7000rpm.

Thanks, but still wondering about the Apexi Airbox?

Thanks for the replies - I've been doing some research, and liek the ideas from Buschur Racing's Stage I suggestions. They seem expensive, but their kit is a good setup. Still, I'm not seeing any tuner deal with the airbox. I like the idea of cold air intake, but its the removal of the stock box that I have a problem with. The MAF and engine mapping is designed for the velocity and volume you get with the box.

So Apexi's box seems a great fit - but maybe too new for people to have used it yet. Maybe I'll fit it in and be the first to post ...
