Octane Boosters

well, most pump gas is 92 octane around the west coast (north) and the EVO manual says to use 93 gas... my only answer to that, a bottle of octane booster with every fill.... i dont add booster in every fill, maybe 1 in 5 fills, but what octane booster is good stuff? what is in an octane booster that i should lok for when buying them? i dont want ppl answering :: NOS OCTANE BOOSTER:: in 1 line.

I WANT TO KNOW WHAT MAKES A GOOD OCTANE BOOSTER SO I CAN LOOK INTO AND RESEARCH WHEN AT THE AUTO PARTS STORE. IM SURE EVERYONE ELSE WANTS TO KNOW AS WELL. (sorry for caps, but i HATE it when i ask a question and get a 1 word answer.)

I've used STP, 0-60, etc.. The one that seems to work the best, is in a blue aluminum bottle with Dale Earnhardt Jr(spell-my bad Dale!) stuff on it.. Forgot the name... Good luck...

thank for the help. i think jonasan50, its outlaw bit not in an aluminum can. plastic, and dale does endorse it. too bad with a little money, you can endorse ANYTHING. as a joke i looked up how much it was to be endorsed by Jenna Jameson... 3k and she will say anything you want about you. (for a friend's 21st birthday. not for me.)

I wouldn't use them.

read the bottle, if you use 104 octane booster, it DOES NOT make the whole tankful magically 104 octane. the increase in octane is miniscule.

There are only two "octane boosters" that will actually do anything, tetraethyl lead (TEL) and methycyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT). Both have side-effects, like shortening the lifespan of oxygen sensors and catalytic converters, and MMT may accelerate wear. TEL is the most effective, and, technically, illegal. And just what octane will you get by dumping a bottle in your tank? I don't know (yes, I'm a chemist), and nobody else does either. It's not that simple.

If you find a product that doesn't claim to have TEL or MMT and contains only "petroleum distillates" it's nothing but over-priced toluene and/or mixed xylenes. Both of those work, but you need more than a small bottle. I know what the RON and MON of the aromatics are -- ignore them. You cannot count on toluene or xylenes having an effective blending octane number better than 105. With that, you can do the math.

Do you really need better than 92? Your car will adjust. If you're racing and you really need it, well, the bad news is it's basically impossible to make your own witch'es brew that's more cost-effective than race gas. And race gas is consistent, it's not going to surprise you like homebrew might. If you can get toluene for a good price you're ok, but be careful. Be consistent in what pump gas you use it with and what proportion you use (no more than 30%), and get tuned by someone who knows what they're doing.

I'm in with the race gas suggestions. I went and bought 3 5-gal gas containers, and I head up to a local place every now and again to fill them. Before I fill up with gas, I dump about 3 gal into the tank (104 oct) to up it a couple points.

Toluene! I mix in a gallon with every fill up. A little pricey but well worth it. NO SIDE EFFECTS!

Do a search on it. This is a PROVEN method to increase your octane.
