It's most likely a clutch problem. Any car can be upshifted while moving eithout the clutch. When you stop the shaft speed differential is too much and it will be stuck in gear.

I also have a difficult time shifting into first and reverse at a dead stop. I usually disengage and re-engage the clutch a few times and it'll go in. I have 20k miles with stock clutch. Perhaps you can check your tranny fluid level and inspect the shifter bushings.

Your clutch is blown. Same thing happed to my mustang a few years ago. I had broke the pressure plate in half and burned the clutch.

its most likely both your clutch and pressure plate are messed up

it really sounds like your trans is screwed hard, if the clutch was bad you wouldnt be able to drive it, it would just rev really high and creep along slower than a snail taking a crap. that said i believe you may have either screwed some of the gears or some of the sychro's in your trans. and yes if you desimated the sychros it would do what you say is happening, any evo owner that has had the updated sychros can tell you that when they start going out, it is hard to put the car into that particular gear. hopefully it isnt the trans but in reality it very well may be it. if you live near daytona, get your car to Daytona Mitusbishi, those guys there are nuts with evo's and can tell you what is going on. i do believe they are also working on a 1100hp evo right now, so for everyone who hates dealer's, not all of us dealers are idiots.

Change your clutch/ flywheel. had this problem last winter and a new clutch fixed it. I had an exedy hyper single plate and it started doing this. i had to shift into 3 before it would go into 1st, also if you pressed the clutch to the floor on a level road the car would roll forward. replaced it with an ACT 24,000 mile later and no problems. When we removed the clutch the t/b was f%^ked we had to rotate the engine to get it to pop off, once we got it done there were chunks of clutch material in the bell housing and the clutch disk was warped.
