Its an emissions device. It basically recirculates exhaust gases back through the engine to burn off excess oil. If you block it off, it will keep your engine cleaner and raise your octane leves.

The real deal on EGR valves is recirculating exhaust gases back into the intake stream. This is considered inert gases since it's already burned. It takes up around 10% cylinder volume to reduce fuel usage and increase the engines effeciency. Most often in use while cruising at a steady speed and most likely the solenoid is never on when the vehicle is in open loop (high throttle %) because it is tied to fuel trim and o2 readings.
Blocking it off will reduce cabon in the intake but in general you are not gaining a lot as far as performance.

The reason to block it off is to get rid of clutter in your motor. Thats really all... at WOT it is not used. It will keep your engine cleaner but mostly it just makes it so you can toss out alot of clutter. It will set your check engine light on however. I threw all my crap like that out which you are required to do with most sheetmetal intakes.

It does throw a CEL, we do have the plates, it does greatly clean up some hose mess under the hood and cleans up the inside of the intake even more. The EGR valves leave a ton of crap in the intake.

The CEL for the EGR and cat is very difficult to do. I would imagine in the years to come as the guys doing computer reflashes keep getting better they are going to come up with a fix for it and do it through a flash. For now there isn't anything you can do other than a standalone.

so for now there isn't an simulator that would trick the ecu into thinking the EGR valve is there and working properly?? Something like the O2 sims, but for the EGR?
I'm sure there would be a high demand for this simulator since I know of a lot of people with the EGr low flow CEL (like me). I'd buy one in a second. Does something like this even exist for other cars?
