more boost/less timing or vice-versa w/ high octane fuel or water injection

just wondering which is better way to tune a car.....more boost/less timing or more timing/less boost using high octane fuel or water injection - keeping AFR around 11.5 - 12.0. Which case is more damaging to the engine in case of detonation?
