I've got 272's w/stage1+ camgears set at-3/-3. the idle is a little lumpy but it sounds kinda cool, never had any problems with stalling or anything like that. I'd say if you can live with the idle you'll be fine with 272's

I got HKS 264/264, no iddle problems, maximum relaibilty, great performance(I went from 13.2 to 12.7s in the 1/4 mile). No to mention that 264's are the number one choice for Al(Dynoflash).

As far is drivebility, ask your self this: Do you really rev up above 55rpm in a daily routine?, if you don't, then get the 264's. The top end you will get it with a TB and MBC, the bottom and midrange the 264's would provide the torque.

I know that 272's are not a bad choice but there is not much going on over 6500rpm with the stock turbo, torque ,boost and power drops significantly from this point.

I have the 264 / 272 combo and it is my daily driver... very fun to drive also, nice low end and great top end...

Right now I just wish I have full 272, and I'm thinking about trading or just buying a 272...

I was just scared of the car stalling all the time and having bad idle, shoot, I run vta bov and the car already idles not perfectly but never stalled yet.

There isn't much difference between 264's and stock as far as idle is concerned.
Why is this..? Just not as big a power gain? Smoother idle not worth it?

This is my first post, however I've been visiting this forum almost daily since November 2004, when I got my EVO. Evolutionm is great and I learned a lot about our cars.

Hpefully my personal videos will help those wondering about the idle (see links below).

This one shows stock cams idle followed by HKS 272s with stock settings (cam gears 0,0)

This one - HKS 272s with cam gears set at I-4, E-1 (to me, idles almost like with stock cams)

i have had straight 264's cams and i now have 280's. i can say that all hks cams are streetable. i there was a vid of my car with the 280's if anyone is interested in searching for it. yes the idle with the gears set at -3,-3 is lobey, but the car has never stalled. the top-end is get with these cams and i would recommend them for anyone. justin

What do people think about the 264/272 combo? How is that vs the 272/272?

Before I crashed my evo, I enjoyed the 272/272 HKS cams. I would highly recommend those if you don't mind the lopiness. Otherwise I've heard the 264/272 combo helps the idle. If you can buy cam gears then those will help the idle with straight 272's.

With 264/272's there is power throughout the rev range. Check my sig out, you'll know what I'm talking about. It's perfect for everyday use. Idle is great, like stock. 272/272 lose a little low end but has ok gains (top end) on stock turbo. On aftermarket turbo, straight 272's are beast's.
