What does everyone think about the catch can? Is it worth it?

 

I bought one and I can definately say that it keeps oil out of your intake track. How harmful this oil may become, I'm uncertain.

 

Oh and by the way, it doesn't help with oil consumption issues.

 

I just installed a ARC catch can on my car and I have already seen oil on the hoses after 2 days.

I would recommend a catch can if you drive your car hard. Its def a plus when you keep the oil vapor away from returning back into your engine. The ARC is a little bit pricey but you can get something cheaper like Helix which will funtion the same.

I went a step further on the catch can pictured above.
I installed a copper tube extending down from the "in" side.
Then I put a wad of Chore Boy copper brillo in the bottom.
This way, the oil vapors have to go down into the catch can, and not just go right out the "out" side, (which is only 1" away from the "in" side). The Chore Boy gives the vapors something to condense on to.
I have seen a hint of oil in my turbo, intercooler pipes or intercooler.

I didn't take any pics. You can buy it at most grocery store. It's 100% copper brillo pad. Just stick a wad into the bottom of the catch can. I epoxied (sp?) a short copper tube from the bottom of the "in" side, so it went down into the Chore Boy. Cost about $4 for everything.

 

oh, so it's just a steel brillo pad and you made it so it'll go through that before it goes out?

I have a different catch can than the one pictured, but I used some JB weld to add a copper tube on the inlet side down to the bottom of the tank and filled the tank up with 3 shredded up steel wool scrub pads to act as filter media. So far I have zero oil buildup on the breather filter I have on the outlet of the can.... it used to oil soak the breather filter within a few days of driving befor I modified the inlet and added the steel wool.

all you need is something inside the can to trap the particles so they are not flaoting around...steel wool as mentioned, works great.

Keep in mind over time you are going to collect basically muddy looking water - lots of condensation, with a bit of oil residue. it is cheap insurance for keeping the intake tract clean, and you generally empty the can once every few months (some as often as every oil change - all depends on your usage of the car, oil weight, etc etc)

I have BR MAS pipe and upper intercooler pipe with a breather on the valve cover and it stinks inside when the car is idling in neutral. Will a catch eliminate the odor?

 

I have the Weapon-R one, cheap from lancershop, works fine. Saw some oil after a few days as well. Didn't think about the steel wool stuff, tho. Will look into this. Thanks!

 

I built one using an air tool filter and some new lines, cost me like 20 bucks and it catches alot of oil. I installed mine in the PVC location tho instead of the intake, I didn't catch much of anything in the intake so I didn't see a point of it.

 

Here's the one I'll be using from Baker Precision with -12 and -8 AN fittings.
