ACT Clutch Question
ACT Clutch Question
I run my car extremely hard ALOT. Probably have made around 40-60 passes down the track and countless 'freeway' style pulls. I am guessing the car is making a touch over 500 hp currently at 25.5psi. I am forced to slip the clutch ALOT (Half of first) when I launch it mainly due to the 6k launch only building 6-7psi of boost. I launched it a few times at a higher RPM and I didnt need to slip it as long but then my tires just sit and spin. I am slowly getting better at the launches and can now cut consistant low 1.7's every time.
The problem is i think I have already started toasting the clutch. It doesnt seem to give that instant grab that it used to. More of a slow engagement feeling. It still holds enough to break all 4 tires loose without much effort but just doesnt seem to be doing me much good.. slips on shifts, stinks badly after a run, etc... I am going to run the car next weekend at 30 psi or so and i dont think the clutch will hold it.
What is the TQ or Horsepower rating truly on the ACT pressure plate with the 'Street organic disk'? What would I benifit from a puck style clutch? What would I be sacrificing for it? Would i be better off with a twin disc type system (Ouch for $$ though). I just want to find a reasonably priced clutch that will stand to my abuse AND work for daily driving. I dont care if it is choppy, noisy, etc, etc... I dont care about how the car 'drives' compared to most people... I just want the clutch to last. I also wanna hit my 10 second pass consistantly
It just seems like the ACT clutch has given me too many problems... not disengaging properly, slipping between shifts, stinking horribly, etc... Maybe I am outpowering it but I dont know. ACT Man may be able to give the true specifics of the clutch but i am really trying to find a clutch that will suit me. It just needs to hold

40-60 passes down the track w/slipping the clutch out at 6k, seems like ur clutch held up fine. I dont car what clutch u get, if u race it a lot, and slip ur clutch at 6k repeatedly, its not going to last. Maybe you'll get 5k miles, maybe 10k. but with that much power and repeated abuse, its not going to last, and if the act lasted for that long, just get a new one.
trina, you need to ACT 3 puck or exedy twin disc, triple disc with your setup.
Exedy twin disc is fairely expensive, but if you could afford it I would go with the triple disc setup rather than the twin disc.
I'm not sure what ACT 3 puck would do to the transmission, but I'm sure Dirks gonna come in and elaborate.
ACT street has their limitations. anything after 450whp would be pushing it, I think. Although ACT seem to understate their hold level.
I'm fairely sure you know how to slip your clutch if you've launched it more than 50 times and it's not dead yet (limited slipping).
With the gt35r setup, should go with something harder.
So, 3 puck, or triple.
But you should do a search on exedy double clutch on this board before you move on.

it might be the 6 puck act, not the street. But it could be the street one, and they change it out more often than us "normal" people who's got budget smaller than Turbo Trix.
The Turbo Trix gave thumbs up for ACT though.
Do a research on ATS double and triple clutch as well. It's push type conversion, makes it shift a lot faster.
I thought Exedy was, but it's not, it's pull type like ACT and stock.

Turbotrix runs a prototype extreme pressure plate from ACT with a 6 puck disc. If your clutch lasted that long, just showed how good ACT really is. try a new ACT kit with a 6 puck disc. As far as I know ACT doesnt make a 3 puck, only exedy makes that with their ceremetallic clutch kits. For the $$$ ACT is the best clutch for the evo in my opinion. You can even have trial and error with ACT and still spend less then most other clutches. and alot of times the pressure plate is able to be reused with a new disc and TOB.
hehe, I always figured the clutch would last longer
Yes the car has been beatin extremely hard. The first 20 launches or so I need to slip the clutch very hard. Now that I have the two-step and everything I can get away with slipping it a little less but its still a decent amount... especially compared to the stock turbo. Also, I would not let off the gas that last 20-30 passes between shifts so it would spike to 8.5k and grab down to 5k or so every gear (From 1st to 4th) so I am thinking the 4th gear slip probably was destroying the clutch pretty badly.
The only reason I am disliking the ACT clutch is it really does not like to disengage sometimes at real high RPMs. It is all adjusted correctly so I am thinking I warped the disk from so much abuse. Im curious to see how terrible the whole thing truly looks.
I will be going out this weekend with more boost trying to hit a 10 second pass so assuming the clutch will hold for a few more passes I think I can hit it. If it doesnt oh well, then its time for new one. Im just so damned sick of pulling that god damned transmission.
DO NOT PUT A SCATTER SHIELD ON THE TRANNY!
Sorry I made that big but it is by far the biggest pain in my @ss I have ever dealt with. It doubles the transmission pull/put time. I hate that bastard
Anyways... after this weekend Ill let you know how I did at the track and probably a week after that I will pull the transmission and take a look at the poor clutch. I am sure it is pretty.
Also, can anyone explain to me what the difference would be with the puck style vs street disc. I know it should engage quicker and slip less and probably hold more power but other than that what difference would i notice?
