P0300 -> 2 days later -> Bad coil

I just want to share my past 2-3 day experience.. I'm sure it's happened to others.

Around 2-3 days ago I started getting P0300. To be honest I really didn't think much of it. I gapped my plugs different last time .024 instead of .028

Today after helping my friend bolt up a 3" TBE on his SRT4 I filled up with 100 octane and bumped the boost up to 1.5 bar (aprx 21.7psi). Drove the car like 100 miles not one prob.

So the P0300 comes back on (I had reset it earlier) Soon after the car just goes limp. I limp off the interstate and start to diagnose the problem. I couldn't do much with cars passing within 5 feet of me @ 70mph. Sooo I limp off the interstate to a nearby parking lot.

So I call a friend we go buy new plugs.. I put those in and notice 2 plugs (on the same coil pack) look kind of funny. Looks very rich. As safe measure I unhooked all my electronics (safc wideband etc). Doesn't help...

I attemped to get the car home but my friend pulls me over and tells me there was a blue flame on the exhaust. Next we noticed the muffler inside and cat were glowing red. So we unhooked the injectors on #1 and #4 and I got the thing home.

So that's my story... and now I start figuring out what to do. I'm going to see what a stock coil cost then compare that to the COP system buschur sells. If anyone reads this and has a stock coil they will part with for a low price please PM me

damn cars.

please look over my grammar/spelling.. i'm exhausted.

edit so MD623072 Coil+ignition is 95.14 that seems cheaper than upgrading so I'll go that route.. now to find someone that can get one of these over-nighted hmm

why would you want that? I'm more worried about getting a new one right now than selling the old one

Swapped the coils this morning and unhooked the bad one. The cylinders that were on the bad coil are fine.

Can't believe nobody has replied.. Does anyone know where I can get MD363552 overnighted or fast shipping? Mitsubishiparts.net says 4-10 days and its 113 + 13 shipping.

:edit:

Has anyone tried these coils from advance auto part?

Try your local dealer they should be able to get them for you rather quickly.

I would advise you to stay away from the HKS DLI II, I had it and as a result we think it fried one of my coils as well. Again it might have been soemthing else but I was advised to get rid of the HKS DLI II and I did, just thought I would share with ya

I plan on upgrading to the COP system at some point. If I fry another coil I'll definately ditch the DLI2

Evo coils contain the power transistor unlike older DSMs.
It is very possible that is what went bad.

2 things usually kill a coil, heat and stress.
IMO I wouldn't worry about the DLI killing a coil. They do not commonly go and you probably just had a marginal one from the start. DLI is not necessarily going to kill it any more then high boost and lean conditions.

I think it was a marginal one like you said. I was having a few issues before which is part of the reason I went for the DLI. I'm just very happy thats all it was.

Another thing I've been thinking about is if there was any damage to the cat from being so hot. That thing was glowing red and my friend said he saw a few sparks right before he pulled me over. Sounds like a good excuse for a test pipe!

I did learn one thing.. I NEED to have basic hand tools with me at all times... and possibly a set of plugs and a few other odds and ends. I should have the new coil in a few days if not Tuesday.. car is just waiting with gt100 in the tank

Here is a pic of the bad coil.. I just noticed how f-ed up it is.. clearly you can see where it's damaged.

Looks like one of the terminals shorted out. Might want to check your plug wire too.
