Shifter Bushing Question
Shifter Bushing Question
I bought & installed the BR underhood bushings and am now looking for a short shifter. I think I'd like to get the B&M. My question is should I get the poly or the brass shifter bushings? Is there much of a difference between the two?
there really isnt that much different other than whats clear. The brass is supposed to give you a crisper feel. I used to have aluminum bushings on my eclipse and I never had a problem...either way, it will be an improvement from stock rubber.
I'm still on the fence about the BR bushings. The throw is definitely smoother, but the shifter doesn't go back to the middle anymore. You move it to the left and it stays to the left. Same for the right. This is kind of annoying and I'm hoping the new short shifter and bushings will remedy this.
haha, yea I had to press both of mine in, wasnt bad once I found the c-clamp I made a couple of years ago...I am buying the b&M in a couple of days, I will let you know what I find

i used the base bushings from www.speed-source.net. i bought the underhood ones and the base ones. I've only installed the base ones so far along with a B&M Non adjustable short shifter. LET ME TELL YOU I LOVE THE COMBO!!! I def would recommend anyone to use the same combo. I'll be installing the underhood bushings this week also. I sell the short shifter for 150 shipped and i have it in stock. let me know
Some people have had problems with the underhood brass bushings seizing up on them.
I found a good deal on the Kartboy poly underhood bushings so I went with those instead. I doubt they will seize up, unlike the metal ones. But I did get some ebay brass ones for the shfiter base bushings since those don't move around and were relatively cheaper than any of the others you can find.
I really want a B&M short shfiter...BUT damn... the prices on those are just
. Oh well... I'll stay with the stocker for now.

I'd like to hear more details about how the underhood brass bushings siezed. Do you mean the underhood bushings siezed to the tranny or siezed to the cable?
For those of you who've been pressing your underhood bushings in, that is not what you're supposed to do. The reason Speed Source includes a strip of sand paper with their bushings is that they purposely machine them oversized slightly to account for the variations in cable end sizes. I had to sand mine down slightly and then it fit without the need to press them in.

As far as the short shifter and the bushings, I went with the B&M adjustable that came with a kit. Included was some lube & poly bushings, but I also bought the brass ones seperately and will use them instead of the poly ones. Should something go wrong, at least I'll have a set of poly's to install.
I got the buschur bushings under the hood as well. I'm not too sure if I like them or not though. It is more precise, but it takes more effort in the throws. The directions didn't say lube the bushing itself, so I didn't. I will probably lube them up, and if that doesn't make it easyer, I might go back to stock or the polyurathane ones.

I just dealt with the underhood brass bushing siezure deal. The shifter was getting very stiff and almost impossible to engage into 3rd and 5th gears. I hadn't lubed or sanded the bushings during the install. The smaller (upper) bushing was definitely siezed. I tried to spray lube it to remove and then coat with a thicker grease. No dice. I ended up hitting it wih spray lube and after a while it feels great. I'd really like to be able to remove it though.
