Fuel Pump Problems???????

Last night my car died going down a very curvy road! For those that are familiar with Portland OR it was on Germantown Road!

Anyway, after a $100 towing bill and some diagnosis time I narowed it down to the Walbro fuel pump or fuel pump wiring.

A search brought up a few threads about fuel pump failures but not too much. I'll post my finding as I go deeper into this.

FYI, without the engine running the brakes and steering REALT SUCK. But I was going down hill and was able to coast into a pull out at the head of a hiking trail.

what happened? specifics please. Mine died at a windy autoX, and it turned to be the starter wire! Turned the key, and absolutely nothing! we need more info in order to help you. there are enough of us out here who probably have been thru the problems you have!

I have full electrical power and the starter does turn the engine over. The spark plugs are dry after several attempts to start the engine. I can not hear the pump wining like I use to when I would click the key to the on possition, so I removed the fuel pump cover to listen closer and still hear nothing.

That is how I have narrowed it down to the fuel pump or fuel pump wiring. Later today I will try the stock pump to see if it will start.

I checked all fuses and I dont think there is a fuel pump specific fuse.

Well after some checking tonight.....
Fuel pump is working.
SAFC II Conections are good.
Spark plug spark check = no spark!!!
With spark plugs out NO GAS SMELL from cylinders!!!????
MAF is sending signal, I can check that on SAFC II.

So it seems it is down to a bad Crank or Cam sensor so the ECU does not know when to fire or inject fuel.

Or is is a bad ECU!

Any input?

If you havent figured it out by tomorrow, PM me, and i will have my Mitshu mechanic TELL you for free what the problem is. He has helped me with all my problems from day 1. it doesnt sound like a starter prob after all. you didnt put any additives/cleaners in your tank did you? they gum up the pump. I read a similar post about someone with the same issue, and they also had an SAFC. I will look for it in my posts, and get right back!

Thank you,

I saw that tread last night durring my search. I just re-read it and will check the fuses again and the O2 Sensor wires, especialy where I have the O2 Simulator.

02 sensors wont have anything to do with start up. vehicle has to warm up as well as the heated 02 sensors need to get hot enough for them to work correctly. therefore on cold startup's 02 sensors are just ignored.

but one that is grounding/shorting out could cause a problem.

I'm at home now and my car is at work, I'll start again in the morning

dont know if mitsu. have a KOEO (key on engine off) self test. but it would throw a code if the 02s were shorting or grounding out.

No spark, No fuel would more often be crank sensor and not can sensor.
If you really have neither then it is crank sensor or MFI relay took a crap.

plug in a data logger and see if the rpm's increase while your cranking. that should tell you if your crank sensor is ok. also does the cel come with the key in the run position?
