Help: NEED INFO ON WHINE (and thats not the good kind)
2005 Evo 8 GSR, 26000 miles, ACT clutch (about 1000 miles on it). It now whines from 0-20 mph or so, but stops after that. I have searched and searched, and the whining that I see is from blown t-cases, and I fear that statement. Id like to know what everyones opinion is. Here is the situation:
I had to replace the clutch because the dealer I went to sucks. The pick up on the pedal was getting high in the throw. It was there for an oil change, so I had them check the disc. They came back saying it only had 15% on it. I gave them the "ya right" look. Its my daliy driver, and it may have some mods to it, but 85% worn at 25000 miles, Id have to be riding the clutch (which I dont) to eat it that fast.
So, luckly, I was back in Michigan (hometown), so I went to my mechanic, we took it apart, and tada - the stock cluctch was fine. Still had about 80% of life left. And little to no dust, if anything it needed to be seated better with some harder runs. The line needed to be bleed. Dealer wanted $1600 for the job. Since I had the parts, it was $500 with my mechanic. But I already had the ACT clutch sitting there, so I swapped the disc and assembly in and removed the restrictor. I was going to do it eventually, so might as well then.
Drove 450-500 miles lightly to break it in, and then a few track runs (5-6) at Milian Dragway (and first time with that car at a track). Using the 5K limiter and feathering out the clutch. Aside from some slow times, do to me not shifting fast and having a boost leak, goes like a bullet, no burnt clutch smell.
But I now notice, after I have silenced my muffler for daliy driving, that there is a low whine when I come up to a stop (clutch in, out of gear, or stop and go - clutch in and in 1st gear), almost sounds like a supercharger, but not terribly loud. I dont hear it on the freeway, but the car generally is noisy. I drove the 650 miles from MI to NJ with my exhaust open, and didnt notice it at all. Now that its silenced I can hear it. And its been a few weeks since I have silenced it, so is that a "normal" sound or is my life about to suck?

Are you sure it's the clutch? The main reason I ask is because you have a walbro fp listed in your mods. Next time you hear it, check to see if the sound is coming from your rear seat on the driver's side.
