Is this a good turbo/deal?
Is this a good turbo/deal?
I went to a friend of a friends house tonight, and after hour or so of BS he begins to talk of parts that he is wanting to sell. The thing that caught my eye was a turbo that he had. So I asked more about it and he tells me its a T4 and he wants $450 for it.
My questions are:
Is this a good turbo (pro-con)?
Is the price right?
Would this be a good choice for upgrading from the stock 16G or not a good move?
Any help would be apreciated.
Thanks
Ace

T4 what??? is it a t88??? is it a gt35R T4? is it a GT30R t4?? what kind of T4 is it. what downpipe is it set up for??? what manifold do you plan on using? there alot of factors that contribute to this question.
hey man whats going, sorry i couldnt get back to you sooner. I'll list out what mods i'd do if I were you baed on you telling me you want to run 11's. your first set of mods should go as follows:
Turboback 3" exhaust, front mount and all piping, intake, fuel pump, boost controller, boost gauge. After these mods you'd want to get a flash, BUT if the finances are available, get cams/headstuds before the tunr because those are your next mods and you'll need a retune anyway.
this will get you into the low 12's with good driving as long as your clutch holds up. So you may want to do a clutch/flywheel combo somewhere along this mix.
if you want to run 11's on pump gas your next mod should be AEM EMS or methanol injection or both. I made 379 whp on pump gas with meth injection runing 30 psi. you cant run much more then 21 pis on pump gas without methanol or alcohol injection. You could run 30 psi on c16 race gas if you want though and get very similar if not higher numbers then me.
basically this is how it breaks down. the full exhaust, intake, intercooler piping, boost controller, and fuel pump will net you around 270whp (dynojet speaking) a flash will put you around 300whp. AEM EMS on top of that would put you around 325whp. cams would put you around 360-370whp, methanol on top of that would put you over 400whp.
The aem ems is good for about a 30hp increase over the reflash. it eliminates your stock mass air flow sensor and eliminates your stock ecu. But you need to have it tuned by someone who knows what they are doing (IE: AMS, Buschur, Turbotrix, Dynoflash, PRECISION DYNO, Switzer, etc...) As long as you have it tuned for daily driving and WOT and have them do a cold startup tune on it the car will be fine. If your going to run over 26 psi whether it be race gas or methanol injeciton with pump gas you might also want to consider an ignition upgrade such as the DLI2 twin power made by HKS. increase throttle response greatly.
I stock exhausts, downpipes, fuel pumps, boost controllers, cams, Meth injetion kits (when I can) front mounts, bov's, clutches, flywheels, etc... pm me if you want a price or suggestion on anything.
as far as exhaust goes, figure out if you want straight exit or angle exit and the work from there. Then you can buy SS, Titanium, expensive, inexpensive, etc... Helix makes a great performing exhaust that is cheap as hell but its also LOUD as HELL. My personal favorite exhaust is the Greddy TI, i have it on my car and love it. its also pretty loud. My 2nd best chice is the greddy evo2. its quiet when cruising but loud when you get on it. Also a very clean looking exhaust that has a distinct low tone to it. it sounds awesome.
My favorite downpipe I like is the DC sports. its 245 shipped and skips the cat and goes right to the exhaust. This way you dont even need a test pipe. With most other companies by the time you buy a downpipe and a test pipe you spend 300$ or more. here you buy the downpipe only as it goes right past where the stock cat was and bolts to the exhaust. its 3" mandrel bent Stainless Steel and clears everything perfectly on 2003-2005 evo's. it will most likely wok on the 2006 as well.
My favorite intake is the Injen. Comes with an upper intercooler pipe and a intake pipe for a good price. 355$ shipped and you get half your piping taken care of.
My favorite intercooler was the Buschur deluxe but I've since seen the Perrin and I like that better. its more money but it requiers minimal cutting. The buschur deluxe is nice (I have it on my car) but it requires a decent amount of cutting to the under tray. Nice design but too much cutting IMO.
My favorite ignition upgrade is teh HKS DLI2 Twin power. greta piece that I noticed way better throttle response with.
Def go with HKS cams. they make 3 differetn sets that can mis matched. 264/264, 272/272.280/280. i'd use them as follows:
264/264-daily driver, not looking for a bigger turbo, wants to keep stock like idle
264/272-daily driver, looking to upgrade to a 20g, gt30R, wants power of 272's but trying to keep stock like idle. This person is willing to risk a small minimal loss in hp for stock like idle. very close to 272/272 combo as far as power increase but idle not as bad.
272/264-daily driver, looking to upgrade the turbo but wanting quick spoolup, 20G, TME, GT3071R upgrade wanted, idle not that great.
272/272-daily driver/track only car, looking to do a decent upgrade such as GT3076R, or something similar, not really concerned with IDLE quality
272/280- Bigger version of 264/272 guy
280/272-Bigger version of 272/264 guy
280/280-daily driver/track only car, looking for maximum power, looking for GT35R or larger, doesnt care about Idle at all. Amazing top end pull.
These are my own personal preferences, so these parts may not be the best for everyone but in my eyes they perform very well. Let me know if there is anything else you need man. Good luck with whichever route you take!!!
