Finally dropped tranny again (8th time)

Well I finally dropped out the tranny again. I will get some pics of the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel for your amusement. The clutch disc is completely flat with the metal grommets holding it together are ground down, obviously no clutch material really left. Small chunks are missing from the disc itself, the flywheel looks more like a brake rotor with 30 thousand miles on it. It has relatively large grooves in it (Probably from the metal grommets rubbing,, too drunk too look in detail at the time).

The car had obviously made more power than the clutch was designed to take. I believe a number of things led to its ultimate demise less than 3 months after the install. First, 'hot lapping' the car (Not letting the clutch and crap cool between runs). Two, excessive slippage of the clutch while launching was needed in the beginning to hold the boost levels up ensuring no bogging and the other reason was to try to limit wheel spin. Third, 'power shifting' I think had a large reason for the clutches death. On one of my other cars (91 DSM) with the same ACT clutch disc and 2600lb pressure plate, the clutch held fine for many more passes, both cars making close to the same power. Once I started to power shift in the DSM it took 4-6 runs for the clutch to start to slip. Now it is pretty much junk as well.

All in all, I think this clutch for the price was a great clutch. Granted in the Evo it didnt last very long at all but I was overpowering the rating by a decent margin for one and I beat the hell out of it as well. For a lightly modded car I think this is a great clutch or for more of a daily driver car that doesnt care about hitting the FASTEST possible ET for thier car it is fine. What I have learned about the clutch is it doesnt hold very long power-shifting and should probably not be 'hot lapped' judging by the warpage (Which could have been from many many reasons but i have heard that the full face disc has the warpage problem the most... mainly from heat).

Anyways, Ill let ya know how the car does with a real clutch soon. Ill bring it to the track shortly after I get the new one in. I am having the tranny looked at again while Im in here so it will be a week or two before its on the road again.

The other good news (I guess) is I found another very large boost leak while ripping the car apart. The upper i/c pipe had a large leak where the company I got the pipe from welded the BOV flange to thier pipe. I 'fixed' the leak with JB Weld. Long story short, apparently JB Weld doesnt hold enough pressure. It leaks horridly, which makes me feel even better considering my crap pass, with a crap clutch also had a huge boost leak and all that at 26psi still netted an 11.5 @ 123. I guess we will see what the car does with no boost leaks, a great clutch and alot more boost. I still need to hit my damned 10 sec goal for this season.

The actually transmission drop n swap isnt tough. The GOD DAMNED scattershield is what pissed me off. Not removing and installing the scattershield would shave off at least 45 minutes or more from the total swap. I hate that stupid thing. But yeah... I have gotten the swap down to be well under 4 hours with two people to completely drop the trans, swap the clutch assembly and flywheel and re-install.

I also think I have the most over looked at tranny in any Evo. Stupid thing has been looked at and rebuilt 4 times so far. Oh well... I think I am on the road to the most expensive/elaborate 11 second Evo :P

The problem is now I have split my time and money into a whole nother project car (Figured I would try out the whole domestic V8 thing so I have a fully stripped first gen RX7 with a small block in it). I just keep gaining more projects and never finish any of them fully
