Turbo Surge

I'm running the HKS SSQ and its VTA. I heard that if you run a SSQ VTA you get a lot of turbo surge. I can feel my car buck a little bit after I drop the gas when I'm boostin. I can control the buckin by letting the gas off slowly...

How bad is this for my turbo??

that's not turbo surge. you're getting an excess fuel condition due to the VTA that cause the idle to stumble. At times this stumble can cause the motor to stall causing the loss of power steering and power brakes. I would recommend against running VTA.

YMMV,

Greg

what you're describing is the stuttering problem I'm referring to.

I'm having the same problem but I have the APS BOV, which shouldn't do that... should I adjust the screw or something?

To avoid this you guys need to recirculate your BOV basically disable VTA ...

Please! before this thread gets ugly, recirculate the valve if you are on stock MAF.
Maybe the site should have a HUGE front banner sawy "Don't come to us with stuttering/surging/missing problem if you are running VTA and and stock MAF" :}

the APS bov is recirculate... but sometimes when I shift it jerks really bad and makes this "bam" sound..... I don't know if its from the BOV or not but when it jerks, I can hear the BOV really loud.... maybe I need to tighten the spring up so that it recirculates more, maybe mine is venting to the atmosphere too much at the given RPM when I shift. I thought it should be preset from the factory, but maybe not.

yeah I could put the stock valve back on I guess... I just came across this thread so I figured I would post rather than starting a new thread. I am going to try adjust the APS first and see if that helps. I know everyone praises the APS valve, but maybe mine wasn't adjust right from the factory. If worst comes to worst, I'll just go back stock because it only takes a few minutes to swap them out.

Hey I adjusted my APS BOV and man what a difference it made, I turned the allen screw almost all the way clockwise, but so I still had enough threads to tighten the nut back. It doesnt jerk at all when switching gears, and everything seems good.
