How to disable / disconnect / remove the 5k rev limiter

with this mod , it will be easier to launch the evo with consistent 60 foot times of less than 2 seconds at the 1/4 mile.

use this mod at your own risk!
the rev limiter acts as a safety device so that evo drivers dont do any unnecessary damage by launching the car too hard.

found this idea back in a 2004 thread https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=108697
but this "how to" needed more expanding
cause it took me 30 minutes to figure it out, when it should only take 5 minutes

before mod:
the limiter on a 2005 evo kicks in at 5000 rpms when the car is in gear, clutch depressed, and no forward momentum
video clip -

what you need, or what i used
1. phillips screw driver
2. small pair of needle nose pliers
3. 10mm wrench or socket

Step 1:
Disconnect the battery (just the negative side)

Step 2:
Remove this piece that is located below the steering wheel. Behind it is the fuse panel. This hole is what i used 2 look through

I also opened the lower dash (using the phillips screwdriver on the 2 screws), so i could make it easier for me to fit my left hand with the pliers toward the plug that needs to be disconnected.

Step 3:
Locate plug

Size: 39.7 KB

Name: 100_4444a.jpg
Views: 0
Size: 34.3 KB

Step 4:
Disconnect plug
using the phillips screw driver, push up on the white tap that holds the plug in place

Size: 26.2 KB

while pushing up , pull the plug out using the pliers
Name: 100_4462b1.jpg
Views: 0
Size: 27.9 KB

Step 5:
just let the plug dangle.
Name: 100_4466.jpg
Views: 0
Size: 56.1 KB

then close up lower dash and reconnect battery

no more rev limiter video - http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wMTEwNzc4OTZzNDEzZGZkMzF5NTQx

however, this mod does have a strange aftereffect..........
{when shifting at high rpms, the rpms will drop much slower than before}
example: Both of these videos are while accelerating in 2nd gear and then i fully depress the clutch. The second video doesnt look like it, but the clutch was fully depressed for the entire time.
Video: before mod - http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wMTEwNzc4NzZzNDEzZGZkMzF5NTQx
after mod - http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wMTEwNzc4ODZzNDEzZGZkMzF5NTQx

so after you do this mod, your evo will act a little different. this is a normal occurrence for evos with this mod. just be advised that it will happen and dont freak out when it does

now this slow rpm drop can be either a good or bad thing. depending on how you look at it.
good - makes rev matching easier
bad - when coasting in gear it will feel like you still have your foot on the gas.
- making it more difficult to slow down before a turn. especially on a road course

Finally, this mod can be easily reversed by simply disconnecting the battery and reinstalling the plug

you dont need to do all that to get to the plug.

You can get to it just lay so you can get underneith the dash it takes less than a min

go the the clutch and look up and towards the fender and there it is

I didnt need any tools at all... I just took out the coin-holder/dimmer switch dorr and stuck my hands in there and unplugged the plug w/o using any tools....

took less than 1 minute to do...

but wow....looks like you did it the long way

Thanks for the post...itll help other people who are clueless

If you get an EcuTek flash you can set it to whatever you want for any model Evo.
I have it turned on on my 03 @6000. Someday I just want to be sitting at a light and have someone pull up next to me and rev on me. Imagine the look on thier face when you hold the throttle down and hold it on the stationary rev limiter.
I can make 18 psi of boost at 6000.
Of course I still have the stock clutch so I don't think I want to try it.

You forgot to add that by removing the 5k rev limit it will trigger on the ECU a code that says: Clutch pedal position sensor, sometimes it will trigger the check engine light, but after a while it will go away. Happened to my car, took it to warranty and this was the code that came on. No big deal
