Unhappy I've got CRANKWALK!!??? where's the Tums?!

I sure hope not! I took my car away from my "trusty" mechanic for a second opinion, and this guy knows his 4G63's inside and out. He is a dragracer, and a former Mitshubishi service manager. He has done alot of work on my car as well. I have driven my car with 8-10 K miles, with the vibrations comming thru my seat bolts everytime I would get to 4K rpm's. I was told this is normal due to my Horsepower. (?) I dont have enough to shred 4 serpintine belts, oilpan, AC brackets, etc.. the list is long on what I shredded/cracked due to the harmonics! I was told to look at the harmonic balance shaft by Andrew at Dyno4mance when the first belt let go on the dyno. My mechanic didn't look, he said it was the HP! I took the mechanic for a ride BEFORE belt 1 let go, and asked him if he could feel the vibrations, he said he could.

Back to the story. My "new" mechanic told me to get in the car, and drive forward 5 feet, he was under the hood looking at the pulleys when I did this, and the look on his face said it all. I said " I am a big boy, tell me what you think it is" and he didn't tell me until I prodded him a few times, he said:" It might be my imagination, but I saw your crank pulley come out towards the inner wheel well! It is either the 8-10K miles driving with a broken harmonic balance shaft, the shaft upside down etc.. which caused all the vibrations leading to crank-walk or something serious. Maybe that is why I had all these problems lately. No problems BEFORE all the vibrations, will keep you posted, I think someone owes me a short block.

By the way, I did call 2 other mitshu mechanics at different dealerships, and ran the scenario by them, and asked them what would they look at first........ALL said the balance shaft/balance shaft belt. does this sound like I am in for a stroker GT35r or what? pass the Tums.

I'll stick with my 4G63 and not a guy calling it a 4g64.

That is real easy to verify, drop the pan and measure the crankshaft end play. I would think that if it moved enough for him to 'think' he saw something you would have other issues like a poorly engaging clutch and tons of metal shavings in the pan. My guess is the balancer is fubared and it flexes under a load, and that's what he saw moving. Take the thing off and look at it. Should be pretty obvious if it's causing that much vibration.

EDIT: here's someone with a stock crank pulley for sale.

My clutch DOES engage strangely, 1" off the ground sometimes, 3" at other times, sound with clutch dis-engagement, have gone thru 2 clutches since this vibration issue started. dont know, but will find out and post his findings tomorrow! thanks again guys.

You can attach a dial indicator with a magnetic base to the frame and save the hassle of dropping the pan.

sounds almost like your balancer shaft is out of sync.

when i installed cams my car vibrated like hell once i got past 4k rpm. I had no idea what it was, but apparently the timing belt slipped duringthe install and my balancer shaft got out of sync. Sync'd it back up and all is well.

who did your cam install?

guess i should have read the rest of your post.

i am pretty sure it's your BS.

it's a PITA to resync, but at least you wont have to pull the motor.

Thanks dylan, I will pass the info on to the mechanic. Thank-you! The cams were installed by the guy looking at it now! it was however doing it before these new 280's. it was with the 272's. I noticed it shortly after the triple carbon clutch install!
