I use a "cocktail" of 2 qts MT-90 & 1 qt MTL for all my EVO guys and have had great luck. BTW - The Redline engineers don't recommend straight MTL for our transmissions.

I have the same mix and found it to be a perfect blend. Like DJT said, straight MTL or MT-90 is not good, but a mix gets just the right weight.

that sucks.... the Redline distributor in Taiwan only imported the MTL I asked about MT90 and they said no sorry only MTL

What should I do...how bad will it be if I just use MTL only

I think this should be enough of a warning for you, so please read it again.

I'm not sure what they offer over there, but maybe look to what the asian/european owners use on their Evos to see what is compatible. Worst comes to worst... OEM fluids.

I believe many have been using straight MT-90 for their tansaxles without any problems. Thats what I have reading on these forums.

I'm using the Redline cocktail that DJT mentioned. He told me he asked Redline about it and one of the engineers recommended that mix to him. I replaced the Royal Purple Synchromax I had previously and it's been good, after a track day and daily driving for about 5K miles so far.

If you read the Redline site... the MTL is recommended for areas with cold climates since it's slightly thinner than the MT-90, but I dont' think you want "thinner" viscosity with the Evo. That is one of the reasons why I switched from the Synchromax because I was told it's a bit too thin for the Evo trans, according to Royal Purple's site and recommendation.

This might help, too. Good luck in the research.

Hi,

Just changed my transaxle fluid with Redline MT-90 straight for the 4th or 5th time (45k miles). Still on stock clutch and it feels great. I may try a quart of MTL next time, so maybe smooth it out.

I think the spec is for 75W-85, and MT-90 is 75W 90 while the MTL is 75W 80. Thus the "cocktail" is probably a little closer to the factory spec. My car still shifts pretty smoothly, esp right after the fluid change, but I bet it would be even smoother with the cockail. I used NEO RHD (GL5) in the transfer case and rear diff.

Good luck,

Ok I called them and yes one of the tech guys dont recommend using MTL alone ONLY because he said the Evo uses 75w-90. But if your car recommends 70w-80 then yes you can use MTL without mixing. I told him I cant get MT-90 so he recommended 75w-90 NS. The NS is a GL-5 type gear oil... I thought we were suppose to only use GL-4 for transaxle?

To specify, I first used straight MT-90 because I think the manual says either 85 or 90 weight. The shifting was so notchy I could barely put it into gear - especially in the winter temps. After a few weeks of that, I drained a quart and went with the cocktail.

If you are going to go stright with one fluid, use the -90, NOT the MTL. Hope this helps.

I went to the dealer the other day and I asked what they use for transaxle oil and he told he doesnt know. I told him to check and find out what brand they use. He came back later and told me all he knows is its 75W-90 and its for manual transaxle. I told him is it GL-4 and he said he has no clue because the bucket that they get it from has no label on it except 75W-90 on it.... WTF

I wouldnt mix them together. Try getting a good GL-4 oil if the redline doesnt work out for you. I use AMSoil.
