Exedy Story... Kinda Long, But Worth The Read...

I bought an exedy twin carbon clutch from Matt Gold down at *** Import about 6 weeks ago because he had gotten it for his car but ended up not wanting it. I paid bout 650$ less then i normally would so I jumped on it. it was supposed to be a MM022HBMC which is the heavy duty pressure plate. When i got it, it was the MM022SBMC which is the standard PP. i called him and he just couldnt believe that a mistake was made but he took my word for it and got me a HBMC PP overnighted from exedy (actually the only one in the country). I really appreciated what Matt did based on my word that it really was a SBMC PP and somehow a mistake was made.

Fast foward to me installing it. Some people said I would have a problem with it because it slips when cold and blah blah blah, but I thought it would be ok because I was getting the Heavier PP. well I got it and broke it in for around 975 miles. thats more then enough of driving on it. I barely boosted because I didnt want to put too much load on the clutch. so after almost 1000 miles of never gettin on it I try a few pulls at 30 psi (stock turbo with meth) and it slips in 3rd, 4th and 5th. so I heat it up which basically you just kidna ride on it with the clutch half depressed in essence slipping it so it heats up. This is what Exedy had told me to do when it slipped and they told me how long to do it (15 seconds). after I heated it up it was fine and would grip no problem.

Ok so i drove around like this for about 2 weeks but it was kind of annoying because i go to school in the AM and its cold in NY right now and every morning if I boosted at all in 3rd, 4th or 5th gear on the highway it would slip. so i'd have to heat it up and then be ok. well 2 weeks of the clutch being heated up all the time was too much for it I guess because about 12 days ago (fri, nov 11th) i went out and was about to rac this cobra and I just couldnt get the clutch to grab, i heated it up and it wasnt grabbing no matter what I did. so i was pissed off and after a bunch of times of trying to heat it up i gave up on it because i didnt wanna kill it. well it was too late, now it was slipping even driving around normal. So i call Matt from *** and tell him my story and he says "get it out of the car and lets get it to Exedy". so i overnight it to them on thurs of last week so they get it friday. By monday night Matt tells me he's gotten Exedy to warranty it (IN SPITE OF MY CLUTCH BEING INSPECTED AND EVERYTHING BEING PERFECT) and they will now overnight me an exedy triple ceremetallic clutch as a replacement. so on tuesday it was overnighted and I got it this morning. i just got the car back from installation about 30 mins ago and it feels great. I didnt bang gears but daily driving with it feels awesome. It definitely grabs very hard but feels good.

My opinion on the exedy twin carbon is that its good for a race car that only has to heat it up for 1-3 days a month when it goes to the track. its just not meant for a car thats daily driven and needs to be heated up 3-5 times a day when the car is driven. i drive alot between work, school, going out and I was heating it up probably 30-45 times a week. it was just too much. The triple carbon may be a different story though.

but I must say Matt from *** really took care of me and did his best to keep me happy. all in all the guy invested hours betweein calling exedy for me, calling me etc... I would not have gotten this clutch warrantied if it wasnt for him. the gy really has the best interests out for his customers and everyone should see him for that kind of person. even though he is a competitor of mine I support him 100%. if anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

-Steve

Matts Definetly looking out for all of us, I had issues with the triple carbon myself, I agree its for racing (or better suited for). Exedy is A1 in my book, and I wont change for anything!!!!Glad to hear all is well with you!

*******it! Is there any clutch out there without a horror story or two?

I'm seriously wanting to just go with an ACT clutch now since if I'm going to go through clutches like tissue paper it might as well be cheap.....

The funny thing is some people have had great luck with ACT. Some people have had great luck with Exedy. $700 vs $1700+ is a big difference!!

yea it was a crazy month i can tell you that. I sell alot of act kits and exedy twins and I can say that i've never had a customer call me and complain about shifintg with the ACT. but it seems that if you adjust it when it starts locking you out, it will be fine. one of my best friend and customers with an 03 evo has had the act for 9 months and put tons of launches on it. it shifted awesome up until 2 weeks ago. he was having issues getting into 4th. he ran 12.1 at the track with a not so good 60ft and thats where he started gettin locked out of 4th gear, he came home and adjusted it and all was good. the clutchu just needs adjustment as it wears down, thats what it seems to be.

the exedy twins are awesome and this triple I have is sick. for someone like me who basically just dumps the clutch, it does the job.

its funny because when i had my tsi awd i remember telling people (when speaking about launching) that i'd rather slip the hell out of the clutch and let it take the abuse because a clutch disc and labor was less $$$ then a tranny and labor. WELL WITH ALL THESE 1500$-2500$ CLUTCHES GOING AROUND THATS NOT THE CASE ANYMORE!!! I'D RATHER DUMP IT AND BREAK TRANNY PARTS TO SAVE THE CLUTCH THEN BREAK THE CLUTCH!!!

IT ALSO HELPS I HAVE AN EXTRA TRANNY,

Thanks for the kind words.

Competition or not - a CUSTOMER IS A CUSTOMER.

I've been jerked around, had stories change and just flat out lied to and I refuse to do anything of the sort to a customer.

Steve - you've had some crazy luck this past month and all I can say is I hope this is a catalyst for change!

The car Gods will now smile upon you!

Good Luck bro.

exchange it, seriously, if you have a street car its just not gonna work. when i sent mine back to exedy, its not like anyting was wrong with it. they told me the pressure plate, intermediate plates everything was in spec. its just wont cut it, if you do decide to go for it, please post up results.
